I'd like to clear up a family myth and find out if my mother-in-law's mother has been pulling her leg all these years. I was unsuccessful asking the newspapers. The story goes that Arthur Gore, born 1828 Fannistown, Wexford, Wexford, Ireland, was dallying with a young girl, the young girl's brother did not approve, caused an incident involving a hay barn, and the death of the two was the result. Now, surely, I thought, such an event would not go unremarked, but I'm afraid I don't have an approximate date. Arthur's father was John Gore, born Duncormac, and his mother was Hannah Shudall. Arthur's wife was Sarah Ann Warriner. Their last child was born in 1874 so his death would have to be after that. I'd like to know if any of this is true. Any suggestions?

Yes, I checked that site, too, and didn't find anything. I was wondering that there might be some newspaper archive from the last part of the 1800s that might carry a news item or something like that.

How? I can't see any Gore listed.
I've already checked Freeman's Journal (Dublin) but nothing found there.

I would agree with the approach aghadowey mentioned and would look for the death first.. if something can be found there, then a more detailed search could be carried out in the newpapers.
I dont know how positive you are about Arthur's year of birth - but the closest match I see in the index in an Arthur Gore born c1805 died 1894. I think it would be unusual for a death not to be registered.
I had a look in the Irish Times archive but see nothing that matches the names or place.
do you know the name of the young girl ?
there is a death of a child named Arthur Gore in Wexford listed in 1875 ... is he connected ?

The child Arthur born in 1874 was his son and he died in 1875. I do not know the name of the girl as the story came from my mother-in-law's mother who was the first Arthur's granddaughter. If Arthur had been born in 1805 and was fooling around with a young girl in a hay barn after the year 1874, he was a spry old gentleman. It may be that the story is entirely false. I just can't imagine this girl's brother causing 2 deaths, whether accidental or out of malice, and it not getting into the papers or into the courts.

Sylvia, the Gore details from your link are for a Gore family (landed gentry or something, I think) and are not even anything to do with Co. Wexford which is where the Arthur Gore in this thread was from.

Hi Janice. I am also researching my GORE's from Duncormic, whom I think are closely related to yours. Would love to hear from you. Do you have contact with Peggy Kennet, or Peg Handcock, as they are both related to Arthur Gore b.1828? Look forward to hearing from you. Katharine.
