Mixed Marriage in Letterkenny
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 22:11 UTC (UK) »

Hello, wonder if someone could tell me if a 'mixed' marriage would have been conducted in a Roman Catholic Church. We have a marriage taking place in Letterkenny in 1870 but no place name, the couple eventually moved to Scotland and we believe their children were brought up Catholic.

Many Thanks.

I've seen mixed marriages (Catholic and various Protestant denominations) that took place in R.C. Chapel, Church of Ireland and Registry Office so it's difficult to give any one sure answer to your question.

Marriage certificate will state where marriage took place.

If you do want to get the marriage certificate- index to civil registrations is online (free)- search for bride and groom separately then cross-reference results for match:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347
To order the certificate from GRO:
www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

If you have problems finding them in the index let us know and we'll try to help.

Thanks again Aghadowey, had a look at the link but as there are so many Alexander Sweeney's and Sarah Strain's (didn't realise Strain was such a popular name in Ireland) I am going to have to wait until I have the time to go over them. Maybe get around to it at the weekend. Just wanted to say thankyou.

There are no marriages listed in civil index for 'Sarah Strain' in Co. Donegal in 1870 (nearest is 1861 in Strabane district).

Hi, realise that now...the birth certificate of their daughter states that Alexander and Sarah were married on 12 November 1870 in Letterkenny, Ireland-no place name given which is unfortunate. I presume there is only one Letterkenny in Ireland.  Yet another brick wall in family research I guess.

Thanks for all your help yet again Aghadowey.

Kind Regards.
