Cefn Gelly, Clyne
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 22:31 UTC (UK) »

My partner's g/grandparents lived at Cefn Gelly, Clyne around 1875.

Does anyone know what Cefn Gelly means and whether there is a Family History group for Clyne/Neath area?

Regards

CEFN, a ridge.
CELLI (or GELLI, sometimes GELLY), a grove or copse.

I take it your partner is a member of the Williams family that still lives at Cefn Gelli. (Note there was another Cefn Gelli in the valley at Blaengwrach).

Her great grandparents were William and Elizabeth Heaven.  Elizabeth's maiden name was Allen.  William was from Birmingham but Elizabeth was born in Glamorganshire probably around Swansea/Neath area.  The address of their household shown on the birth certificate of their eldest son in 1876 was Cefn Gelly, Clyne in the sub district of Neath.

Cefn Gelly was the name of the farm which was tenanted and later bought by the Williams family.  Like many farms it was also used in the second half of the 19th century to house industrial workers. The nearby Clyne Tinplate Works (on Cefn Gelly land) opened in 1879 and would have seen an influx of workers.  There were also a number of small mines on the hillside above the farm.

Thanks for the information about the farm.

We've been trying to work out why her g/grandfather moved from Birmingham to South Wales then a few years later moved back to Birmingham with his new wife.  I've just ordered their marriage certificate which might give a few clues.
