O'Rourke family
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 23:26 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace Michael O'Rourke either junior or senior on any appropriate census or even a birth or death.  The son I have been told was born on 20/08/1885 possibly in Rochdale.  I have his marriage cert when he married Elizabeth Toal on 16/02/1912 and his age is given as 25years.  This took place in West Derby Liverpool.  His occupation is given as a merchant seaman.  I have been told that he died on12/07/1965.  His father was also Michael.  Don't know much about him except he was a boiler-makers labourer on his son's marriage cert.  The address for Michael Jnr on cert is 92 Ford Street Kirkdale.

I seem to be going around in circles with this.  Any information or help would be appreciated.

I posted this infomation yesterday on another thread but same applies to your man.

Quote
If he was in the merchant navy pre 1941. You can get a search for his record (and with any photos too) from
Southampton Archives service.
Civic centre Southampton
SO14 7LY
Tel: 023 8083 2251
Email: city.archives[at]southampton.gov.uk
There is a charge for this of £10

If he joined after 1941, you need to get intouch with the National archives.
You are looking for the 5th register of merchant seamen

Here's a possibility for him Michael O' Rourke born Jul-Sep 1885 in Bury, Lancashire. Bury is very close to Rochdale.

1901 Census - RG13/3638

Michael O'Rourke Head 44 Provision Merchant born Ireland with his wife Margaret(aged 42) and sons Michael(15), Andrew(14) and Edward(Cool, with two nieces and a servant.

Hope this was of help?

If these are your relations just an added extra, Michael Junior was born with a twin that died at birth or in the first month, they named him John O'Rourke.

Hi

thanks for help.  I had found the 1901 census but had not looked up 1911 census.  Although date of birth for Michael O'Rourke junior fits I can't imagine why he might be employed as a merchant seaman and his father as a boiler-makers labourer only a year later in 1912 unless the bottom had fallen out of the grocery business!!  What do you think?

The only two families/dates from the North that fit are the one I provided and the Liverpool one so unless the birth place of Rochdale is very wrong, i don't know what to suggest next.
Maybe try and get Michaels merchant seaman records from Southampton Archives office and work back from that.
