Jane SHEPHERD? b. c.1813 Kirby Moor
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 01:19 UTC (UK) »

I have a bit of a complicated request. A relative of mine called James FRANCIS married a Jane before the 1841 census and they lived in London until Jane died in 1885. They had no children - so a child's birth certificate can't answer my query. I believe that they married before civil registration started because there is no likely entries on FreeBMD (the most likely, Dec qtr. 1837 one can be discounted because that James married Mary Pilkington). So for a long time I have not known anything about James' wife Jane except that she was born around 1813 in Kirby Moor/Moorside, Yorkshire. I believe this is the same place as Kirby Hill, correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyways, yesterday I found a possible marriage in London for the couple in 1836 (at a church very close to where they were living in 1841), James FRANCIS married to Jane SHEPHERD. Witnesses were Hannah SHEPHERD & Wm. Geo. PACE. No father's names were given of course.

I have been unsuccessful in locating a baptism in Kirby Moor for this Jane SHEPHERD, which is making me wonder if that is the correct marriage. However if anyone is able to check for me to see if they can find a c.1813 baptism for Jane it would be of tremendous help.

Thanks,
Alexander

Hi Alexander Smiley

Kirby Moorside is a different place to Kirby Hill.

There are two Kirby Hill's, one is near Richmond and one near Boroughbridge. The Kirby Hill near Boroughbridge was formerly known as Kirby on the Moor.

Kirby Moorside is between Helmsley and Pickering.

Having looked at the census images and the 1851 does say Kirkby Moorside not Kirkby Knowle as they have transcribed it, between 1861 and 1881 her age ranges between a birth year of 1813 -1817.  After 1851 it does not specify more than just Kirkby and there are 15 separate Kirby/Kirkby parishes in Yorkshre on the IGI.

As Kirkby Moorside is specified on the 1851, in the batch between 1813 and 1817 for KM there were 23 Janes christened, none of which had the surname Shepherd.

However

The IGI is not complete, even where parishes are transcribed bits have been missed off, and in KM there is a baptism of Hannah Shepherd in 1810 with parents John Shepherd and Betty Easton.

When using the search of the batch in KM with those parents it brings up

Jane Shepherd
bap 14 April 1808

This is very possibly your Jane, with sister Hannah and she lied on the census so as not to appear 6 years older than her husband, maybe he didn't even know!

Thank you Evie and Madpants.

I am now really confused as to which Kirby Jane was born at - all the censuses use Kirby not Kirkby (without the 'k'), but that could just be a coincidence because both of them sound the same. The 1808 one is a possibility - as Jane got older her age also increased, so that in 1851 she was a year younger than her husband but by the time she died she was a year older.

Thanks,
Alexander

Kirkby or Kirby makes no odds, i doubt she have been able to spell it anyway.  I'd stick with kirkby moorside as that was the only specified kirkby.  As she was in London you'd not expect to census enumerator to know there was a silent k!

Hi Alexander

I had a look at the Kirbymoorside records and the only Jane Shepherd I can see born around the right time is the one baptised 14 April 1808 (born 13 April) daughter of John Shepherd and Elizabeth nee Easton of Kirbymoorside

Thank you Lyn, I'm considering that one as a possibility. It's hard to say for sure though.

Thanks,
