I really need to find his emmigration from NZ (date and port) and where he went, as well as whether he was solo or accompanied by the family (see orginal posting).

 - they're a bit of a mystery, and so I'm trying to work out their story by finding documentary evidence.

This is why I'm trying to find a shipping list or some other document that shows their departure date and destination.

Hi OzJen

Of course it's a sound idea to endeavour to locate documentary evidence, but sometimes the records we seek, are just simply, not available.   (As mentioned previously, there will be no immigration record for the BENNETT family ... and it needs to be remembered, that many of these passenger lists, have not survived).

It's a pity that Ernest and Elizabeth's death certs. don't record the length of time spent in Australia.
BUT ... perhaps that information is available on a death cert. for one of their children ?

You say another child was born to them in 1912.
That birth certificate may record more precisely where the family was living at the the time ?   No doubt it would state Ernest's occupation - which might lead to finding listings for him in trade directories over the years (in the event that electoral roll information is not available) ?   [I'm assuming that this is information you are also wanting to find ?]

I managed to check the NZ Birth microfiche record ... and yes, the entries for Ruby and Pearl BENNETT were made under Section 24 of the New Zealand Births and Deaths Amendment Act (refer to earlier posting).

Was not able to find any school record listings for the BENNETT children.

Hi Lu,

Thank you so much for all this very useful information! 1907/1908 do look likely, if the names were struck off before the Nov 1908 election and they were not around in 1910.

Thanks very much for looking up the microfiche as well - very interesting and another little puzzle solved! Grin

I will try the 1912 birth certificate and see if it yields anything of value. It will take a while to arrive.

I've found an article in Papers Past very recently, that mentions an E.H. Bennett and Co Ltd in Auckland, which was owned by Ernest. Would you mind checking Wises Driectory once more to see if it also disappears at about the same time? That may help confim it.  Undecided

Thank you again,

Hi OzJen

Unfortunately, the Wises Directories for 1906-07 and 1908, are not available.

1909 - WISES

No listing for a business "E.H. BENNETT" or similar.   I checked under the trade listings (Contractors) and nothing there either ... also his name not showing under the alphabetical section for residential addresses.    Sad

---     1909 WISES

Ernest and Elizabeth Ann had been at "London Street" in 1905.

In 1909, Frederick Jabez is living at No. 5 London Street, along with Albert Ferdinand BENNETT, solicitor (his son) :   Huh

Many thanks for your time and effort, Lu. Pity about those editions of Wises not being available. I'm surprised the E.H. Bennett business doesn't show up, considering the 'rave review' the business got in the 1905 paper. It's all quite curious; like just about everything else to do with this branch of the family!

Hello OzJen,

Shipping & passenger arrivals in Sydney can be found at Mariners & ships in Australian Waters online at
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/

Unfortunately, not all lists have been transcribed yet for that era.

The State Records Office of NSW has the lists on microfilm under Immigration
