Hello everyone from Australia.  I would love some help with tryingto find a convict ancestor William Nation. he was transported from Southhampton/ Portsmouth in 1838 (ship Lord William Bentinck) for stealing a canvas bag worth a shilling to Tasmania.  He was 27 so I estimate his birth year about 1811.  That is all I know about him.  I would appreciate any help with any info at all.  Thank you

Hi,

On Ancestry.com it says that William was 26 years old, and his trial was on the 1st March 1838. It also says he was convicted of robbery with violence and was given life.
There are quite a few marriages for William Nation's before this date, but without knowing where he was born it is difficult to find out any more about him.
regards.

Hi paco, thank you very much for taking the trouble to look William up. I have read his convict record but the top part where his birthplace and marital status are are too faded for me to read. I can make out 'highway robbery' and what looks like 'single' and not much more.  Because I didn't know where the trial was held I can go no further with him.  Apart from his convict record and free pardon there is no further trace of him after that in Tasmania.  Cheers...

Do you know if he was born in Hampshire?

There is a William Nation, son of William & Susannah baptised in Gosport 10 December 1806.  He is the only one I can find at the moment.  But I think he was married to a Jane and still here in 1841, with a family in Southampton.

Hi,

On Ancestry.com it just says the trial was held in Hampshire, England. Might possibly have been at Winchester as this was quite an important town at this time.
Regards.

hello, thank you very much everyone.  I have no idea of his birthplace as nearly all my other Nation side comes from Devon, but cannot seem to find him anywhere.  I will write to Tasmania archives online and see if they have any more knowledge of him and repost when I have more info.  Apparently he was 'a very dangerous character' and I would like to know his story.  Thanks for looking..cheers from Downunder!

If he was that 'dangerous' I'm surprised he wasn't hung.  Many offenders were given the death penalty for what we would consider quite minor crimes.

You may find details of the court procedings in The Times digital archive.

Thank you very much bearkat, I will look it up.  I didn't know the Times was online so thanks for that. Yes, I thought highway robbery was a sure death penalty. Yes he didn't have a very good time in Australia either, was lashed, fed bread and water, solitary, put on chain gangs and often charged with misconduct and refusing to work.  And then disappeared from us!.....
