in Thom's 1877 there's a Maguiness's place listed off Great Brunswick street.

other possible matches could be

  Magee's court off Charlotte St
  Maguire's Court off Nicholas St

are these details from BMD certs ?

if so, the registration details (district, sub-district etc) can help narrow down which locations best fit.

Hi Shane
Thank you for the reply
18 magennis court came from gro birth Dublin south
the other came from parish records from Dublin Heritage site at Dublin city library.
both were baptised in St Andrews.
Does Thoms 1877 say 18 Magennis place was occupied by Fordes by any chance
Thanks again

Great Brunswick Street (now named Pearse St) is in the registration district of Dublin South and the registrars sub-district of 'Dublin No. 4'.  A listing of streets in this registrars sub district includes a Maginness' place and a Maguiness' court... so they seem to be different places

neither street has any details listed in Thom's for 1877, which means the houses were probably all small cottages or tenements.

There's a few Forde entries in the Trades and businesses section of the directory, but nothing with either of those addresses. What occupation was Mr. Forde ?

Thanks again Shane
I just assumed it was a spelling error because both address were number 18.
John Forde died 1885 age 63 .occupation on death cert said Army pensioner but on all children's birth details parish and GRO certs he is listed as Laborer.
Rumours are he was British

I'll have a look at a few old maps and see if I can locate the streets but I'd say it's possible that the two streets are adjoining and maybe people mixed them up, but it does sound like the same house to me.

Unfortunately there's no details on John listed as the directories generally only include trades/business people and gentry.

have you been able to locate a marriage for John ?

Thanks to eadaoin 's directions  I found 'Maginnes place' on an old map of Dublin, and it's to the north of Brunswick/Pearse street, opposite Pearse st station.

It's still there - except it's spelt 'Magennis place' - see google maps : http://www.rootschat.com/links/07ez/

On the older map the street ends near to the right angle section.

Thank you all for that information .I must have walked right passed it yesterday when I went to Dublin city library on Pearse Street.
Getting back to your question Shane about John Fordes marriage.
John Forde married Julia Swan at SS Michael and John Oct 20th 1872.
His fathers name was Michael Forde. Both are listed as labourers.
His address was 14 Kennedys lane?
Hers 8 Nicholas .She was listed as a servant.
I do not know if John was born in Ireland or the UK or if he was in any Army?

the reason I asked about the marriage is that a number of the marriages I've seen for army men around that time, list their current or former regiment etc.. which might have helped you trace details for John. If was listed as an army pensioner then he must have been in the army or some sort ancillary - are you certain the death cert is for the right John Forde ?

As far as I can see Maginnes/Magennes place would back onto the old GRO office..

a little more detail for you...

a list of 1877 Dublin streets show that Kennedy's Lane was off Nicholas Street.

There's no listing for Kennedy's lane, and number 8 and 9 are missing from the Nicholas street entry.

Hi Shane
yes I definitely have the right death cert for John forde.Died  Red Cow Clondalkin registered by wife Julia.Buried St john S Church Clondalkin  Although they spelt Forde (foard). Date match exactly and wife matches and address. This is also were Julia is buried ( she became a Hamilton after second marriage ) Strange .
could he have been in the Army when he was younger and then went on to become a labourer and then get an army pension at retirng age
