I am having difficulty in reading the occupation description of my ggggrandfather on his son's 1880 death certificate extract issued by New South Wales BDM Registry (Australia). Both son and father have the same name. In the column name and occupation of father is William Henry Walker. However, the two hand written words for occupation are not clear. I think it may be a location i.e. the first word is "Place". The second word defeats me entirely. If a location, then it is possible it is somewhere in Scotland. Attached is a cut down of the certificate extract. Any help from RC members would be helpfull. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it's "plan" something - compare the other "n"s in the document. Having said that I'm really struggling with the second word...all I can make out is "mounter"

I'm not very good at this but I've attempted to darken the image a little and to stretch it lengthways in the hope that his very long narrow writing might be a little clearer..........it ain't

There is an occupation 'Plan mounter' bringing together everyone's suggestions :
Classified ad in Melbourne 1956: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19560808&id=MSYQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=PZUDAAAAIBAJ&pg=7178,1103285 - top left corner
A New South Wales ref: http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Agency\5731
Another, again with an Australian connection www.thefreelibrary.com/The+1862+Land+Act+Map.-a0148482314
Assistant Plan-mounter and book binder, Survey office - again an Australian ref
Can't find a definitive explanation of what a 'plan mounter' did other than a link to books/printing etc. from the references above.

Many thanks to all who provided input on this matter - it has been most helpfull. Prue and Monica seem to have hit the nail/s on the head with "Plan" "Mounter". I have now found occupational references to Mounter - such as Powder Flask M, Stone M, Stove M, Drawing & Plan M, Photograph M, Shoe M, Map M - which seem to be related to the era of manufactures 1870s to 1880s. Work (which now days) might be described as involving assembly, modification and fabrication. There are references in 1841 under Picture Restorers and Frame Makers to "Architects Plans & Drawings Mounted" and "Drawings Mounted for the Album and Folio. Also, a Mounter is described as a skilled worker who mounts pictures or jewels. I found it interesting that "Plan Mounter" - when advanced googled - pops up (only) in States in Australia and primarily in state government architectural, land and survey offices. With a 1880 ranking (in bureaucratic hierarchy) to under draftsman. I will contact Institute of Draftsman (persons) to see what I can turn up. Again many thanks.
Michael
