Hi
I have been unable to find a birth or marriage record for Christina, all I have been able to find so far in relation to her is a record on the 1861 census in Glasgow, where she is a widowed lodging housekeeper, and she states that she was born in Balnaceil, which is in Durness, Sutherland. Her death record states that she died on 16 June 1877 in the City Poorhouse, Glasgow, aged 82 years, therefore she was born c1795, her father was noted as George Mackay and mother Mary Mackay. Her husband was Daniel Mackay, deceased railway controller. Witness to her death was niece Mary Ross of McAlpine street, Glasgow.

Hi Cjeff,
I was unexpectedly in Glasgow a few days ago and had a look on the index to see if I could find your Christina Mackay, but I'm afraid I didn't have any luck.
I only saw one Christina Mackay on the index who gave her birthplace as Sutherland, but she was born in 1827 and applied for relief in 1893, so could not have been your Christina.
Two applicants called Christina gave both their married and their maiden name as Mackay: - one born 1831 in Kinlochbervie - applied 1899 - one born 1786 on Skye - applied 1860 Neither of these seem particularly likely either.
I did see a Daniel Mackay in the index. He gave his year of birth as 1795 and his birthplace as Ireland. He applied to the parish in 1855 complaining of pains in his legs. When the Inspector called round to see him the next day he was not at home and the application was not taken further.
Once people had initially applied for poor relief, then any notes of subsequent dealings with that person were kept on the same record, so if Christina was living with someone who had applied for poor relief (husband, child, other relative), then Christina's notes may not be under her own name in the index. As well as that, there are some gaps in the records for the City Poorhouse, where volumes are known to have gone missing.
Mary Ross, the niece who signed the death certificate, may have applied to have Christina admitted to the poorhouse, but without knowing something about Mary Ross, it wouldn't be possible to identify her in the index.
I am sorry that I was not more successful.
Karen
