Visiting Ypres - anyone need photos of graves?
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 12:17 UTC (UK) »

This isn't a guarantee but as I am going to be doing my own tour of WW1 cemetries, I will try to take photographs, if you can give me exact details.

I'm going on the 28th November, just for a few days. If you have any requests, plaese can I have details as soon as possible so that i can make myself a sensible list! Smiley

I shall obviously be visiting the Menin Gate so panel references and names on there.

The cemetry I am definitely visiting is Lijssenthoek, near Poperinge. My great uncle is in the Australian section so shout if you have anyone in that bit and I'll do my best.

I'm also planning to go to Tynecot and, depending on how much time I have, I might get to some of the Somme cemeteries too... maybe Thiepval or Puchevillers.

This is both time and weather dependent and as I said at the beginning, I can't promise but it seems silly not to ask if I can be of help to anyone else.

Gosh - an almost instant response then.

I have started making my list and suspect it will be quite a long one by the time I go!

Not a request  Grin  I assume you will also try to include the Passchendaele Museum at Zonnebeke on your travels.  It's really good, and definitely worth a visit if you have the time.  Don't know what the Cloth Hall museum in Ypres is like these days, as we haven't visited for a few years, but that too was spectacular if only to see the model of Ypres after the devastation.  Have a good trip.

Now I'm going to have to ask a question about the reference details. Can someone tell me, on the Thiepval Memorial...What does Pier mean? Will it all become obvious when I get there. Assuming 'Face' on Thiepval is the same as 'Panel' on the Menin Gate.

Also, how can one person be on several different panels/faces?

Am I going to get lost in the hunting? Can someone who has been there explain, please?

Jen.
