Riley Look up please Salford.
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 14:08 UTC (UK) »

I have been trying to trace my great grandfather with no avail because his name is so popular!  He is James Riley who married Elizabeth Patton in 1924, Salford.

I have recently found out that Elizabeth's brother married her husbands sister, this marriage is Stanley Patton and Julia A Riley 1926 Salford.

I was wondering if it is possible to find James by finding him with his sister on a census?

If anybody can help i would be very grateful!  I have the Patton side from a few census' but not James or Julia, i think they were both born Salford as there Dad always lived Salford i just do not know his name.  I do know there are two James Rileys born in Salford one in 1903 and one in 1907, i'm not sure if he could be one of those?

Thanks that is odd, James must have been born then and Stanleys wife was definately James' sister, their marriage record shows her as Julia A Riley.

I have just been told that James had a sister called Hannah but i thought that could of been Julie using her middle name istead of Julie as people used to do quite a lot in them days.

Thank you i do not think James could have been that old but i may be wrong, my Dad remembers visiting his Grandfather when he was a child, and my Dad wasn't born until 1963.

I am told that James was in his 60's when my Dad was a child so he must of been born around 1900-1908 to be old enough to marry in 1924.

This is in fact the correct family, and James who is married to Mary is the father of my Great Grandad James, who married Elizabeth  Smiley

It turns out that Julia was the aunt of my Great Grandad not the sister as i was previously told but as there were only 3 years difference in age i can see how my aunt got confused thinking that Julia was the sister of James Jr and not the aunt.

I still have very little info on the family though, just thought i would update it a little when i came across this.
