" In Service " records ?
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 14:28 UTC (UK) »

HI,
Is there any way I can find out where my gma was " In Service " ? Her name was Winifred Maddocks b: 1895 in Manchester. Her parents were Thomas Maddocks b: 1860 and Sarah Ann Leah b: 1863.
Her Mother died in 1902 in Withington Workhouse, her address was then in Gorton Manchester.  In 1911 she was a lay sister in Carshalton House Lodge, Surrey. The next record I have is her marriage certificate in 1924 back in Manchester.
Are there any websites where I could find out where she was employed ?

Thank You

Unfortunately I don't think there is, Debbie, but I'd love to be corrected, because I'd love to know where my own grandmother was in service too  Smiley

Unfortunately there is no central source for those who were "In Service" but some of the larger estates kept estate records which included staffing details.

It is unfortunately one of those instances where you need to find out "where & when" before you can find out any more . A catch 22 situation

Carshalton House is mentioned in this article http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=43049 and it is now St Philomena's school - might be worth contacting the school or the local history library at Sutton to see what records are available from the early 1900s?

Hi Ermy,
Thanks for the article, I have been in contact with the archivist at St Philomenas' and he told me all he could.  He sent me a couple of pictures of Carshalton House but no description so, your article is fab.
It's the gap years I need to fill in, find out where my rellies worked and lived.  If only they's talked about things !!

Thanks again

Both my grandmothers spent time in domestic service, and I have found both in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. I think this is the only practical way, find your relative in the census, and then take note of the address, the name of the family and details of any other servants. Of course this will only work if they are living in.

Same here - my grandmother was in service after 1891.  By 1901, she was married with one child.

Try finding whether they had changed town location census to census, this may give a clue, but I confess I must have been lucky, and am really groping now. An idea occurs- My grandmother lived in Cambridge in a street now demolished called Cambridge Place. It was very bad, but it was immediately to the rear of the highly desirable area where she had been in service, so it might be worth a look at an old map of the area, or alternatively look at nearby streets to her address on the census. You might just get a clue.

"In service" really covers so many jobs and people moved around so much that there probably won't be records unless you catch them on a census.

During WW1 my grandmother was lady's maid to Lady Allenby, wife of General Allenby, and then moved on to be lady's maid to Lady Maud Hoare wife of Sir Samuel Hoare, both men were very well known in the day. She left on marriage and I've still got several huge monogrammed linen tablecloths that Lady Maud gave her at that time.

As an upper servant, it was a good job and she enjoyed it and  talked about afterwards. Probably if she'd had just been a lowly do-everything servant in in a terraced house in Clapham (sorry to anyone who has ancestors who lived there!) we would never have heard anything about it.

It occurs to me that after her marriage my grandmother continued to work for the same family but now on a "living out" basis. Previously she had lived with the family.
