Methodist Church, Calne: where are they buried?
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 14:35 UTC (UK) »

I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me with this request.
A while ago I found an MI on familyhistoryonline (which has now closed so I can't go back to it) which listed an MI for an 1856 death as being at 'Methodist Church, Calne'. I was hoping to go and have a look soon but I'm a bit confused about where it is. I see the current methodist church on Silver Street was built in the 1870s (so too late) but the Wiltshire Council website suggests that the previous chapel on Back Road was later demolished.

If anyone knows where the graveyard might be I'd be very grateful.

I had a look at the old maps available on-line but couldn't find any between those produced 1810 and 1889, so no help there.  However, on the wiltshire.gov site I found this which may help:

"Primitive Methodist Chapel, Calne
A meeting was formed in 1830 and in 1832 a cottage in The Pippin was certified for worship. In the late 1830s services were held in the former Presbyterian chapel in Back Road after which they switched to a cottage in Bollins Lane before returning to the chapel in 1846. In 1851 there was a congregation of 148. In 1886 they bought the former Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Back Road and held services there from 1887. In 1965 the chapel was closed and the congregation merged with the Silver Street Methodists. The chapel in Back Road was demolished."

A e-mail to the Swindon & Wiltshire archives might produce assistance as to whether the "former Presbyterian chapel in Back Road" maintained it's own burial ground 1846-1886.
