What have you got on him already - where have you found his existance, and these approx dates? Have you got him on a census? Were there children of the marriage etc etc

I cant immediately see a marriage around 1861 in Bristol, but you only say he was born there , not married there, so I may be looking for the wrong place.

Hi both  Smiley

I think we might be talking about the family found here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,416352.0.html

If so - are you positive Mary was called Saunders, Kartrix? Just wondering because in 1891 (RG12/1948 94 11) she has a brother Alfred George Lovell staying with her, and there's this marriage:

Dec 1861 Bedminster 5c 1347
George Clark to possibly Mary Ann Lovell

I'm afraid there are several George Clark's born Bristol around 1839 so you'd probably have to purchase the marriage cert to discover what he says about his father

Having said that - I do like this young man in the 1861 census for Bedminster, bearing in ming George was a smith in 1871:

Bristol Bedminster, Somerset
11 Charlotte St

Sarah Clark, head, wid, 58, Market Woman, b. St Philip & St Jacob
Sarah, dau, unm, 28, Milliner, b. Somerset Bedminster
Louisa, dau, unm, 25, Dress Maker, b. do.
George, son, unm, 22, Blacksmith, b. do.
Louisa, granddau, 4, scholar, b. do.

Perhaps you need to get a birth cert for one of the children to confirm the mums maiden name.
Then move to the marriage
Then that will hopefully give a clue about his father

One step at a time is best!

It's very easy to start barking up the wrong tree when you research a common name like Clark I'm afraid ...

Had we identified the correct family on the other thread?

If so then here's the 1891 census

1891
RG12/1948 94 11
Bedminster, Somerset
14 Whitehouse St

Mary Ann Clark, head, wid, 57, Laundress, b. Bristol Bedminster
Alfred George, son, s, 28, Tawning? Finisher, b. London Bromley
Samuel, son, s, 20, Cloth Examiner Clothing Factory, b. Bristol Bedminster
Edwin, son, 17, Mason's labourer, b. do.
Sarah Ann, dau, 15, Tailoress, b. do.
John, son, 11, scholar, b. do.
Alfred George Lovell, brother, mar, 33, Clothing Packer, b. do.
Matilda Lovell, niece, 8, scholar, b. Gloucestershire Stapleton
Alfred George Lovell, nephew, 6, scholar, b. do.
Mary Ellen M Parsons, lodger, s, 23, Brush Maker, b. Devon Devonport

Just noticed a William Lovell, brother in law, was also with the family in 1881!

If you ask me, she was a Lovell and not a Saunders ...

Now the question is whether the person who PMd has been researching this family, or whether they just sent a possible match found on FreeBMD.

Get the birth cert for one of the children, as Liz was advising  Smiley
