New - Marriage Lookup Please
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 19:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I'm relatively new to this genealogy business and I'm a bit stuck. Can anyone help.?
I'm trying to find a Marriage between an Edward New and Mary ? around 1840. I've tried to find this on BMD sites but no luck! The only bits of information I can find are these:

1) There are two baptisms (but not a Marriage) in Preston on the Weald Moors on the IGI both on 28 Sept 1845. One is Fanny and the other is Emanuel who is my 2x grt. grandfather. Their parents are Edward and Mary New.
2) On Emanuel's marriage certificate his father is Edward New and the censuses have Emanuel's birthplace as Shropshire.

However as they were canal boat people I can find neither Fanny's nor Emanuel's birth certificate to confirm what Mary New's maiden name is.

Does anyone have access to the parish registers for Preston on the Weald Moors and the surrounding area who might be able to look up a marriage?

I know how difficult it can be to trace people on the canals but any help would be greatly appreciated  Smiley

Thanks,
Jubee

Hello Jubee
Does Emmanuels age on census tie up with his bapt.date? My boatman ancestor had 4 of his children all bapt.on same
day,the eldest was 8.
What census have you found Em. on?

Hi Jackie,
I've got the 1891 census name spelt Emmanuelle New living in Odd Rode Cheshire, District 4 pg 16.
I'm finding it odd that the marriage of Edward and Mary is not on a BMD site nor the births of Fanny and Emanuel. I know they might not be transcribed yet or being boat people they may not have registered at all.!!
They also may have married any where along the canal system, in which case this could be a "wild goose chase".
Thanks,
Julian

Hi
Is this the family/
1841 census HO107 piece 907 book 1/42 page 27
Park street wellington Shropshire
Edward New aged 40 boatman
Mary 30
John 5yrs
Ann 11yrs
Joseph 2yrs
All born county.
If this is the corrext family they have a daughter Ann aged 11 so that gives year of marriage1828-1830.
This could be why you cannot see a marriage.
Hope this is of some help
cheers cardiff Wink

Hi Cardiff,
Many thanks for this info  Smiley
It does look promising the names fit as does Edward's occupation of Boatman and the location of Shropshire. I shall have to try and trace these forward to see if Emanuel and Fanny appear on future censuses then I'll know it's the right family. Assuming it is, then my searching for a marriage certificate was pointless  Roll Eyes given the date of their eldest child's birth.
Once again many thanks for your help.
Thanks,
Ju

Hi Jackie,
Thanks for the 1871 census. With what "Cardiff" has kindly noted, the search for Edward New's marriage seems to be narrowing down to Wellington in Shropshire.
I've just looked at a map and Preston on the Weald Moors is near to Wellington so the area seems right.
Thanks for the time and effort you are making  Smiley it is fantastic and most kind,

Ju
