Wiltshire Parish Records
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 19:43 UTC (UK) »

I have reached the proverbial brick wall on an ancestor James Elmes[Elms] who appears on both 1841 and later census. He was born in Lacock 1776. He lived at Notton too,and was a thatcher. But there is no parish record for his baptism/christening. What is the reason that North Witlshre towns like Chippenham,Corsham and Melksham are not available pre 1837. Phillimores neither includes these parishes. So is there an historic explanation for these towns. St Cyriac was in place at Lacock. St andrews at Chippenham. So I'm perplexed as the family name abounded in these locations.

Records for these places do exist, but maybe not online just yet.  Not everything has yet made it to cyberspace  Wink

Wiltshire Record Office hold the original parish records or you could try an LDS Family History Centre if there is one near you.  You may have to order the film in, but the fee is relatively modest.
