Yes a mystery Ambly Interesting
I have just been looking at the 1861 and although it is not too clear it does look like Margaret is living either in the same household or next door to a Joseph Stephenson aged 21 born Gateshead. I wonder if he is Margaret's brother

Sorry forgot to add one other clue.
Roberts death certificate, which is dated 28th july 1858 lists the informant of death as James Stephenson in attendence; resident in Sheriff Hill Gateshead. Hannah and Phillip also had a son named James Stephenson
Kind Regards

This is doing my head in
The Joseph STEPHENSON in 1861 same house as Margaret RICHARDSON is 21. He has a daughter Isabella Henderson STEPHENSON, wife Frances.
In 1871 he's 32, & he and Frances have a 2nd daughter, Mary Jane and a boarder, Phillip STEPHENSON age 29 (b abt 1842).
Phillip & Hannah had a son Joseph, but in 1841 he's aged 10 (b abt 1831), They also had a Phillip who is aged 10 in 1851 (b abt 1841). They aslo has a daughter Isabella - the same names, if not people, which all crop up following:
A tree on A**** cestry attributes this Joseph (the one with Margaret RICHARDSON in 1861) as the son of James STEPHENSON and Isabella, and his wife as Frances USHER.
It also has the father James STEPHENSON with wife Isabella having daughter Margaret b abt 1836/37 and a son Phillip b abt 1841. Then Isabella died and James remarried Mary LAWSON in 1842 and had more children. It also says James STEPHENSON died 1880. This links to :
Census 1841 Sherrif Hill, James & Isabella have a daughter Margaret 4, and Joseph 2.
In 1851 Sheriff Hill , James and 2nd wife Mary have son Joseph 12 and Philip 10, son William 3 (who was born Cumberland) - no sign of daughter Margaret.... HO107/ Piece: 2402 / Folio: 461 / Page: 46
I'm thinking the 1863 marriage of your Margaret to Thomas ROSS might be a crucial piece of evidence re her paternity?

Lucky you to be able to go get it right away Look forward to the results!
Though I suppose either way, it doesn't get us closer to discovering Robert RICHARDSON's background

Sorry for the delay - the cert had to be posted.
Margaret Richardson, widow, father James Stephenson/ quarryman, married Thomas Ross (husbandman / whatever that means) on Dec 20th at St Andrews Church, Newcastle..... Ambly was correct about her parentage.... Many thanks I will now correct my tree.
This still confirms that the 1855 margaret Stephenson . Robert Richardson marriage was not the correct one as Margarets father is listed as John Stephenson Miner
Does anyone have any further ideas on tracing Robert or where Margaret was during the 1851 census?
Kind Regards
Jannat
