The word 'Bally' is Irish for town/townland - hundreds of place in Ireland start this way and there are a long list of them in Mayo alone.
If you go to www.seanruad.com and search for words beginning with Bally in Co. Mayo you'll see the problem.
Is the 'Bally resident' on the form from a transcript or actual copy?

Is it a transcription you have or the actual scanned image?- transcription could be an error if person wasn't familiar with placename or perhaps the handwriting was hard to read.

there's a town called Balla in Co. Mayo - which I suppose could be misunderstood as Bally. It's about half way between Castlebar and Mayo Claremorris.  It's pronounced locally a bit like 'Baal'. I remember the town has very wide main street and some sort of market.

There is a Lavelle entry dated 1857 on Griffith's in Balla Town - see :
http://www.rootschat.com/links/07f2/

p.s. Balla is about 24 km from Swinford.

Shane

fixed Mayo typo - should have read Claremorris

Hi
Thankyou for that information. The place name could have been spelt as it sounded. I will follow this up with the other info on the Griffiths Valuation.
Kind regards
