1901 census - Ernest Arthur Sunderland Completed Thank you
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 23:38 UTC (UK) »

Hello again

Please could someone have a look at the 1901 census for Ernest Arthur Sunderland and his family?

They should be living in Woolley and he should be a gamekeeper. His wife was Lily Ann. By 1901 they had at least 2 children, Doris and Winifred but I'm hoping that there will be another one  Smiley

They had 9 children and I have found 8 of them. Gladys is proving hard to find. I cannot find her on the bmd. Either she was registered under a different name or outside the Barnsley area.

Many thanks

If you look in the 1911 indexes for

Sunderland
b1896 +- 4
Woolley

you get Doris & Winifred in Barnsley and Gladys Muriel in Wakefield.  I don't know if this is any help  Undecided

Hi Linda

Many thanks for that. This is the right family and you have found her  Grin

But Gladys is still a bit of a mystery.

Ernest and Lily Ann were married Q3 of 1896. If Gladys is 5 in 1901 then she must have been born around then. But according to the bmd there are no Gladys Sunderlands registered in 1896 at all. There are 2 in Keighley 1894 and 1897 and 2 in Halifax in 1897.

As far as I know there were no family connections with these areas. The Sunderlands came originally from Emley and LilyAnn (Buckle) was from Dodworth.

Thank you for your offer of the other Sunderlands - I'm pretty sure they are related, probably Ernests brothers. It would help me fill in a few other gaps.

That is brilliant, thank you so much.

Septimus and William are 2 of his brothers. Joseph, I think might be a nephew but I'll need to check.

I knew they had something to do with the pit but I had thought they would be miners.

Thanks again

Many thanks to all who have helped me with this. My mystery lady has been found  Smiley

Yes that is her. I found her marriage in 1919. But of course she was Buckle, not Sunderland. Although on the census it looks like she was known as Sunderland.

I'm tempted to send for her birth cert to see what it says. Lily Ann Buckle did'nt marry Ernest Sunderland until Jun Qtr 1896. If he was her father would it have been unusual to have that kind of gap?

Could I be cheeky and ask if someone would look at the 1891 census to see where they are and what they were up to

I've come to the conclusion that nothing is unusual or even unlikely   Cheesy

I'd be tempted to guess that Ernest might not be Gladys' father.  He's shown as single in 1891, so there was presumably no reason why they couldn't have married sooner.  If Gladys is illegitimate her father may not be shown on her birth certificate.

I'll look for Lily Ann in 1891 next, but if you want any more on the Sunderlands just ask.  They're quite easy to find (as these things go)   Cheesy

Hi Linda

It's not often you see the  phrase 'easy to find' on here  Grin

Thank you for all the information. I too think that Ernest was not Gladys' father and I think you are probably right that the birth cert will not tell me much more.

John Barnsley was her brother in law.

I have more info on her father George and family. There was a nasty murder of a police officer in the ginnel between his pub and the butchers shop. The inquest was held in the Travellers Inn, which I think is still there.

I'm off to have a good look at the census info. Thanks
