Griffin and Spalding Department store. Can any one help?
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 00:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am asking on behalf of an elderly friend that does not "do" the internet.... Can any one tell me if there are any records for Griffin and Spalding, ie employment records, or any info relating to the store anywhere.

Her father worked there in the early 1900's. He died when she was 4 years old, so she is trying to piece together a picture of his life.  My Gran worked there too as an accounts clerk about the same time, so I have added what I can remember, but if anyone else can offer anything else, all info much appreciated and I will pass it on... by letter!

Best wishes,

Hi,
There is something listed as being in the Nottinghamshire Archives on the National Archives site - but I don't think it is what you're looking for.
If it was me I would contact the Local Studies Library in Nottingham, as they have an index listing many sources for information on Nottingham people and places:
http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1776
They may not have staff records, but may have details of the shop which might put you in contact with someone who knows what happened to the shop's records.
I also found this:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dtgriffiths/Hughes%20Davies%20Jones%20Family%20of%20Montgomeryshire%20and%20Shropshire/html/morris_hughes_sons__-_three_lo.html
Good luck,
