Thanks everyone for the replies. I am now happy that Richard married a woman called Mary Grace Cloake, finally after the birth of their daughter Emily. Thanks for that spark of genius.
It will need a lot more work on my part to see if Richard and Robert, both younger sons of John Robert Spenceley, a bookbinder of London and his wife Sarah Ann Paine, were in any way related to the 2 William Spencelys, who seem to have had a greater commitment to Devonport. Initially I ran with the possiblity that the William Spenceleys had extolled the virtues of a service life to the wider family and Robert and Richard, as putative nephews or cousins tried it out. John Robert was from North of the river rather than Lambeth, but there's still a chance.
A further complication aris over the surname. Richard and Mary Grace are found under 'Spencer' in the 1871 census at Corunna Place, Battersea. It's never easy!
There are several Yorkshire Spenceleys (so far unrelated to mine), so the possibility of an Emma Rosetta who died in the Sunderland RD is a little suspicious. There is no other suggestion the family travelled up there, so maybe Emma Rosetta (whom I have down as possibly born to Robert and Mary Ann) was born in Stoke Damerel to another family of Spenceleys.
If the girl born in 1876 is the same as the person who died in 1878, it follows that she does not appear on any censuses. Only a birth certificate or baptism entry, or a death cert or burial entry in a Sunderland register will show her parentage.
Thanks again for your help and your interest, Richard.
