Marriage
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 04:46 UTC (UK) »

Can somebody help me with this? Found a marriage for James Scott/Mary Mitchell 1 Dec 1818 at Wimborne Minster on Find My Past. Then found what appears to be the same couple on I.G. I marrying at Whicurch-Canonicurum Dorset, 1 Dec 1818. Are they two different couples and two different places?

Hi Marg,

They are certainly two different places, and I can't see any way that one could be mistaken for the other. Wimborne Minster is a town in east Dorset, and Whitchurch Canonicorum is a village in south-west Dorset. Confusing!

Hope you manage to sort it out!

Best wishes,
Linda.

Hello Linda,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I am still trying to track down parents of my gggrandmother, Mary Ann Scott (James & Mary Scott) and thought I was on to something with the Wimborne Minster marriage. Then I came across the other one. Threw me completely!!!!!!!! I suppose it is possible that two couples with the same names could marry on the same day in different parts of the same County. It does seem a long shot though. My brick wall is getting bigger, and I am getting very confused!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello All,
Does anyone have any further thoughts, ideas on this one? Is it a coincidence or has someone made a huge stuff up. What do you think?

I do know that when the LDS filmed the Parish Registers quite often there would not be enough to use up the whole film, rather than waste the rest of the film they would sometimes  film another parish on the same film . Although both parishes would be in the same county they could be miles apart, I have seen this on their films myself. It is possible that when the information was entered into their database on Family Search that two parishes were mistakenly entered under one name.

Just and idea that is worth bearing in mind.

Thank you very much  Jebber. It looks like somebody made a mistake. I will try to follow up the Wimborne Minster one. On the 1851 census Mary (mother) states she was born at Wimborne Minster, also Mary Ann and at least two of her sisters were Christened there. It is looking likely. Thanks for your comment.
