Early Sandridge (Port Melbourne) Restaurant
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 07:14 UTC (UK) »

My forebear John Litchfield was the proprietor from 1855 until the early 1860s of the 'Universal Restaurant' which was in Bay Street and, according to an 'Argus' notice in 1854, opposite the Ship Inn.  The 'Argus' described it as 'weatherboard, having a frontage of 30' and a depth of 100', with two large dining rooms, 14 bedrooms, kitchen, pantry and small stable'.

I'd be most appreciative for any information of what became of it and/or pointers to any surviving photographs.

Best wishes

The 1865 Sands & McDougall directory shows J. Litchfield, Restaurant 10 doors from the Ships Inn not opposite it, and between Rouse Street and Graham Street on the western side of Bay Street.  I will look at a later directory to see if I can find an number.

There are some old street scenes of Bay Street on Picture Australia...perhaps have a browse to see what you can find.

In 1870 under Restaurants, Coffee Houses, Refreshments and Colonial Wine Rooms there is an entry for  Mrs Litchfield, Rouse Street, Sandridge. and no listing for Ships Inn, Bay Street, Sandridge.  Occasionally the premises are only listed by the licensee....confusing Roll Eyes

The 1875 S&M directory shows the building to occupied by a David THOMAS, MLA, Shipping druggist.

In 1880 Mrs Susan Litchfield has a restaurant in Bay Street, Sandridge [next to the Exchange Hotel] which is one door from the corner of Rouse and Bay Street and it appears there is now another occupant a David FARQUSON, Shipping druggist and the Ship Inn is listed.

Is Susan Litchfield one of your ancestors?

Cheers

Thanks for your replies, Cando.  Yes, Susan was John's widow.  I've never found out what the name of her restaurant was - but being in Rouse Street, it clearly wasn't the Universal Restaurant.

The following details what I have on these forebears:
