do not know how wilbur zealand got his second name, maybe because they were heading to nz,
is there any history on his family anywhere

Wilbur died on 2 November 1967 aged 54 according to the Waimate District Council on line cemetery database.

I am at the library tomorrow so could check and see what the M/I says for him if you like.

As for a death notice I think there may have been one in the Timaru Newspapers but am not sure. Someone else may know more

Yes, perhaps the "Timaru Herald" or the "Oamaru Mail" ?
Although Jackeroo has said ~~he's~~ she's Wink

in NSW, so accessing death notice may present problems.

And would a death notice necessarily give the parents' names of Wilbur Zealand BARTON ?

At some stage though, if Wilbur's ancestry is to be discovered (and this seems to be the desire here), then records of some type are going to need to be purchased.

Mmmm ... "Zealand" ... I wonder if Wilbur was actually born in New Zealand ? [The child of newly-arrived immigrants ?] I can't see Wilbur on a passenger list to NZ.

Born circa 1913 ... (not available thru online birth index ... but can be searched for on birth index microfiche ) Huh

Have been to the library today and found the following info

Wilbur Zealand BARTON birth is as follows:

BARTON, Zealand Wilbert 1912 Folio 4618 Born Dunedin
This is how it was written on the microfiche

Cemetery inscription is as follows:
Wilbur BARTON died 2 November 1967

I tried "The Press" newspaper for a death notice and there was none

Am waiting to hear back from the Timaru Library

Excellent work Newbe.

As mentioned back in reply # 20, I was beginning to get the feeling that he may have been born in NZ. Just couldn't see anything on shipping lists that suggested he had arrived here with parents.

It would be wise now for Jackeroo's friend to purchase the printout of Zealand Wilbur (Wilbert) BARTON's birth record (rather than the record of his 1st marriage, as earlier recommended).

Have just been in touch with funeral home in Waimate and Wilbur Zealand BARTON'S parents are Frederick William BARTON and Emily Jane CARR.

I have info on Wilbur's siblings and some cemetery info as well
