Prisoner Robert Lawrence JONES - Goulburn Goal 1902
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 08:32 UTC (UK) »

I have come across a reference to my G-G-father's (William Gilbert JONES) brother - Robert Lawrence JONES (born Mulwala 1872) on the NSW Archives site indicating there is a photograph of him taken when he was a prisoner at Goulburn Goal in 1902. This is a bit of a surprise as his father William Sturdy JONES was a NSW Mounted Trooper.

I have sent off for the photograph but in the meantime is there any way I can find out why he was there? I know he died with 24 others in a record heatwave in NSW in 1939 and that he worked on a number of cattle stations in NSW around Balranald including "Rangemore".  Would like to fill in a few gaps in particular about his incarceration if anyone has any ideas or references to him? Any information welcome.

Regards Sturdy

There appears to be more that one Robert Lawrence Jones on the electoral Rolls,  so perhaps the prisoner might not be your relation after all?

Do you have any idea of what region of NSW he lived in please

thanks Jenn

Jenn,
I am confident this will be my R L JONES however I guess I can't be positive until I look at some type of Prison Records. My R L JONES was born in Mulwala NSW in 1872 where his father was stationed there as a NSW Mounted Police Trooper. The prison record (internet site) indicates the prisoner R L JONES was also born in Mulwala in 1872.

My mother tells me R L JONES never married and lived in the Riverina area of NSW being around towns like Moulamein, Deniliquin and Balranald. I have attached a photograph of him that his niece says was taken at a hotel in Deniliquin NSW. I know he died on a farm property called "rangemore" which was near Balranald in 1939. That is is the full extent of my knowledge. Just my luck I have a JONES branch to follow! Thanks

I believe this may be your man - right area and located between Deniliquin and Balranald.

Australian Electoral Roll
1936, 1937   NSW  Darling - Moulamein
JONES Robert Laurence - Spring Ridge, Moulamein   Occupation Labourer

Unfortunately the station property does not appear on an old map my OH has of stations in the area.  Not all are marked.  Plenty of hits on google for Spring Ridge, Moulamein though.

Could this also be him? Many early electoral enrolments did not include the 2nd given name.  The 1903 election was held on 16th Dec.  Perhaps he only had a short gaol term Undecided

1903
NSW Divison Riverina Sub-division Mulwala
JONES Robert   Township Mulwala  Labourer

Thanks Cando;
that will definitely be him at Spring Ridge as his sister Eva Mary JONES married William Dempster SMITH and they (SMITH's) owned Spring Ridge. I think at some time my G/Grandfather (William Gilbert JONES) also worked at Spring Ridge as a drover and gardener. He may have been there earlier than Robert.

In regards to Robert JONES of Mulwala in 1903 - it could be him. Unfortunately at this time I don't know enough about him to be sure but he may have remained in the area of his birth?

I can't believe I am unlucky enough to have to look into a JONES family and a SMITH family?

As always Cando thank you for you input.

Hi Sturdy

Just for your information, I previously obtained a Gaol photograph/record for one of my ancestors, and the information on it (offences and punishments) was fantastic!

When you receive your's, and if you have a little difficulty deciphering the offences or punishments (sometimes abbreviated), put another posting here, and I should be able to help you decipher any queries you may have. I've had some experience with court records i.e. with the goodies, not the baddies  Wink
