ARe there any alternatives? I like firefox, but it will keep on using anything up to 100% cpu. and it appears to be getting more frequent. Fan comes on, then computer freezes up, and won't do anything.

It could be the various animations and scripts that download along with the web pages these days that are making the cpu work overtime. Have you got the Adblock Plus add-on? That will selectively disable such items and speed up your browsing.
I just opened Task Manager while writing this, and it shows Firefox using zero cpu capacity most of the time.

I appear to already have it. Don't know what is causing this high cpu, but it's very annoying.

Hi Silvery,
If you are running the latest version of FireFox v3.5.4 then Fasterfox is not compatible. I think you may have a serious problem. You do have a firewall and anti virus which are up to date, don't you? Are you running any scheduled programs which require a lot of processing, such as perpetual disk cleaning jobs? Besides AdBlock there is FlashBlock too.
Close all programs except Firefox, including Internet connection and security. Go back to the task manager and see what is happening. Close FireFox and see what happens to your processing. With your Internet still closed open FireFox. Do you still have a problem? Use your security suite to scan your entire system, viruses, trojans, the lot.
If you haven't got it already I suggest you download MozBackup v1.4.9 http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/download.php This will copy you're complete set of data that you have, bookmarks, history, tabs the lot. It also copies Thunderbird and Sunbird. It also remembers all your connection protocols. Ideally copy to an external or second hard drive.
You should be doing full data back ups anyway. There are many more knowledgeable than myself but if you are still seeing problems then I suspect one of three problems:
1) FireFox is corrupt. Having backed up. Download latest version. Un-install old. Install latest and check CPU processing. If OK restore via MozBackup. (It worked for me between machines: one on Windows ME and the other on Windows XP.) 2) There's a nasty somewhere - it could be a boot logger or something that just sends the Operating System round in circles. 3) There is a problem with the Operating System.
For (2) and (3) take expert help.
Good Luck
Mike

Silvery
I've had terrible problems today with Firefox. In desperation, I uninstalled then reinstalled but it made no difference, so via IE, I went to their website and support forum only to find that loads of people have been having problems. There seems to be as many solutions as there are people with problems. I've tried a few which made no difference, but at the moment, fingers crossed, it is behaving itself. I have a feeling that the problem is related to the latest update and Mozilla will realise that and let us have either a patch of some sort, or another update. I don't really want to do a system restore to last week, as I'll probably lose something else I do want.

I wonder if there is a conflict with some other software?
I have the latest update (version 3.5.5) which is behaving normally with Windows XP on my PC, and with Linux on my laptop.

I have Windows Vista, my OH has XP and he hasn't had any problems. I haven't downloaded any other software, apart from an update on ZoneAlarm, but don't see why that would make any difference. One problem I have is that I can't look at original census on FMP, but I can if I use IE. Also, if I close Firefox and open it in Firefox Safe Mode, then I can open census on FMP. The solution to that is apparently to close add-ons, but as I haven't got any new add-ons, I don't see why ones I've had for sometime would cause a problem.
I think I'm going to have to close down the ZoneAlarm Toolbar, which is an add-on that came with the ZoneAlarm update. I like it as it shows on the toolbar the status of a site (Roots has a big green tick ), but I suppose I can live without that, I have for the past few years.

It's been a problem for a while, and I don't know what to do with it. I tried opera and didn't like it, and my aol connection is just so slow after firefox. I've got xp.
Think my fan needs a clean actually, not that that has got anything to do with it.

Now, now, Downside, not being naughty are you? Everybody know that Firefox is lightyears better than MS "rubbish" which just happens to keep working for most people against the odds and all "good" advice, haha.
I have both systems on my pc but mostly use MS, partly because its fonts are clear for my eyes at a size where I can see a lot of the screen, and even with my new big wide screen that is very important. I found out the other week that I have 15% loss of vision, which explains a lot, so clarity is very very important to me and I'm afraid that the freeware stuff is all for youngsters with good eyesight. Furthermore, I love playing around with making web pages for various reasons and MS is much easier to use; probably because it does not have a problem with code not being 100% correct; we share the same way of thinking. Humans (like me) adjust for slight anomolies whereas most computing code requires an exactitude that leaves me cold, not so MS html, so we get along together perfectly!!
cheers, falcybe

Certain websites can make my Mac go into overdrive and get the fans working hard, eg. the Telegraph newspaper has lots of scripts linking to social networking sites on its pages which I'm sure contributes to high CPU usage. The Adblock Plus and NoScript plugins on Firefox certainly calms everything down.
Another browser worth considering is SeaMonkey which comes from the same stable as Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape, and uses the same plugins.

I have the latest version of firefox and am using windows vista. I have had no problems at all since I installed version 3.5.5 of firefox earlier today.
I also have a ThermaPAK under my laptop to help so that it does not get hot and make the fan work overtime
