I also have a ThermaPAK under my laptop to help so that it does not get hot and make the fan work overtime That might be the answer, although why the laptop should get hot and the fan work overtime, when I'm not even using it I don't know. Quite often I leave the laptop and go back a couple of hours later, only to find Mozilla is hanging. Now I exit each time I leave the laptop.

Now, now, Downside, not being naughty are you? Everybody know that Firefox is lightyears better than MS "rubbish" which just happens to keep working for most people against the odds and all "good" advice, haha. I have both systems on my pc but mostly use MS, partly because its fonts are clear for my eyes at a size where I can see a lot of the screen, and even with my new big wide screen that is very important. I found out the other week that I have 15% loss of vision, which explains a lot, so clarity is very very important to me and I'm afraid that the freeware stuff is all for youngsters with good eyesight. Furthermore, I love playing around with making web pages for various reasons and MS is much easier to use; probably because it does not have a problem with code not being 100% correct; we share the same way of thinking. Humans (like me) adjust for slight anomolies whereas most computing code requires an exactitude that leaves me cold, not so MS html, so we get along together perfectly!! cheers, falcybe
I've tried the others.... Firefox, Opera, etc, but I always find myself coming back to IE. I'm using IE8, and I'm very happy with it. Many of the problems that people have with browsers is that with so many plug-ins like Flash and Java, they don't know how to set them up properly.

It's all given me something to think about. Like Lizzie I get the fan problem and the cpu and the 'hanging'. It's a pain. What do I do to get IE8? Do I go through aol (slow) or download it?

You should get IE8 as part of the Windows update programme. Just click on "Windows Update" from the Start menu.

I have had FF in Vista hanging problem on two sites (Ancestry and Doctors net), since upgrading to AVG 9.
I found disabling the AVG Linkscanner solved the problem, but now see that there were bugs in Firefox 3.5.4, solved in version 3.5.5. Oddly, my PC had not had the 3.5.5 FF update, so have just installed it. I do not have zonealarm at all.
Suggest Firefox users check their version and make sure it is 3.5.5

I should have IE8 then already. Strangely enough, this morning all is quiet on the ff front. It's often worse at weekends.

In Lizzie's other post it's suggested that avast is a problem. Maybe it's a little to do with avast and avg properties. I'll give it a couple of hours and see what happens.
ps (and touching wood) I've never had any trouble at all with aol, always found them most helpful on the odd occasion I've had to contact them.

Using Firefox 3.5.5 now, no problem, so re-enabled the Linkscanner component of AVG. Problem recurs.
So disabled it again and the offending sites now work fine.
Very mysterious, expect some geek will sort it all out one day.
