Hi John

I see a James Moncur with a Margaret in Mary Street Fetteresso in the 1841 census on FreeCen. He was a surgeon aged about 30. Is this your James?

If it was he is mentioned in this article
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/nescotland/articles/stonhiv1.htm

If he was an MD he may be in University matriculation rolls somewhere.

There is a "Jacobus Moncur" enrolled in St Andrews University 1819-1820. The Rolls are in Latin hence the odd name, but that does mean "James Moncur".

I haven't checked Aberdeen as I haven't found their records online, but they do have them in the Scotland's People Centre Library.
Sometimes the matriculation rolls name the father of the student and where they are from, but it varies by university.

Have you viewed the original marriage entry of James and Margaret in the OPRs, does it give any further details?

Hi everone,
Many thanks for the details,  George Guthrie Moncur was -James son. I cannot find details of James in any census, if as you say he may have been a surgeon aged 30 in 1841 he could not have enrolled at St Andrews in 1819 as he would only have been 8 years old. his wife Margaret Guthrie born 1807 had a brother-in-law Patrick Buchan who was a doctor and Captain Guthrie, Margarets father and the Postmaster, had two brothers who were doctors.

Kind Regards
