KIm,
Ok found them.
1861 Walbottle ref 3855-49-12
1871 Walbottle ref 5139-71-12
I see from the Newcastle Register Office site that John and Elizabeth married at St John the Baptist Parish Church, Newcastle in 1853.
Also that on C1871 the couple have a 1 yr old son called Rosby. Birth registered with Castle Ward Reg. District in March Qtr of 1870. Earlier in the June Qtr of 1863 the birth of a Rosby Davison was registered. Then followed by the death registration in Sept Qtr of 1868 of a 5 yr old Rosby Davison.

Oh re-Margarets age I was thinking because she wa 15 her age would be correct. I never thought about the possibility that they had rounded her age down to 15 lol.
I also found a birth for a Mary in 1814 and Elizabeth 1816 Felton who I believe could belong to this family.
I had totally missed the first born son Roseby also. Roseby was the name of Elizabeth's brother Roseby Hogg. Over the years I have come across people who believed he was called Risby or Rasby. I wonder where he is buried? I guess the best place to look is St John's Whorlton, St Mary's Newburn or even St Andrew's Heddon on the Wall. Do you know what happened to the fab Heddon on the Wall site which used to list all the gravestones in St Andrew's? It was most helpful.
Can I ask why we have not looked at the 1851?
Regards Kim

Kim,
My approach ( others might have a similar or different one) is to firstly hoover up all the info from records, then look at it for continuity and corroboration.
And I am in the midst of that process.... including x-referencing details of folk, ages, places etc on censuses, with BMD registrations ( that's how I came up with birth and death of an earlier Rosby Davison)
Although William senior moved around more than the average ( at least Morpeth, Felton, Widdrington, Stannington, Duddo, Bearl,) that "flitting" was in keeping with life of an Ag Lab.

This looks to be the Stephenson family from Southwick 1841, in the 1851 and 1861 census.
1851 : Piece 2395, folio 398, page 4. 16 Kellington Lane, Deptford, Sunderland Joseph Stevenson, head, 45, Cartman, b. Bill Quay, Mary S., wife, 30, b. Northumberland, Alnwick. Joseph S., son, 10, b. Bishopwearmouth, William Stevenson, Father, 60, Ret From Farming, b. Northumberland, Westwick
1861 : Piece: 3767; Folio: 75; Page: 46 11 Gerald St., Bishopwearmouth, Mary Stephinson, head, wid, 45, b. Northumberland, Alnwick, Joseph S., son, 20, Glass Bottle Maker, b. Ballast Hills
A baptism record on the IGI : Phillippa Stephenson, 14 Mar 1850, Chapelry of Deptford, Sunderland daughter of Joseph Stephenson and Mary Davison. Also a Jesse Stephenson, same parents, same day.
Looks likely that the Mary Stephenson in Southwick in 1841 was John and Margaret Davisons older sister, or some other close relative.
There is also a marriage on the IGI : 13 May 1834, St.Nicholas, Newcastle, Joseph Stevenson and Mary Davison.

Alan, Well done- your info answers the question about what was c10 yr old John doing away from his parents in another county- with his big sister !
Kim,
Several farming adverts appear in the newspaper Newcastle Courant featuring the Hylton Red House farm and High farm, Southwick..
e.g. Edition Fri 2 Oct 1868 " Hylton Red House Farm near Hylton Castle, nr Sunderland Sale of Valuable Live and Dead Farming Stock
In consequence of the Introduction of Steam Machinery and various improvements of Husbandry, on the above farm, prop. John Fairrie, by auction on Thurs 6th Oct. ......... "
Then listed horses cows chickens, ploughing equipment etc -------------------------------------------------------
Other articles in issues 7 Apr 1876, 23 May 1884
and several others
"cluts" ?? Kim's version of US saying derived from "klutz" from the Yiddish for clumsy person.! .. pedanTIC MIC

Wow!
Some brilliant detective work here by Michael and Alan.
I know Michael is cross referencing etc but...
Is there anything else that we need to check to solve this? Is there anything that you are still not happy about Kim?

Hi Evie. I know, they have been brill! A lot of people have and I am very grateful for all the help I have been given. Michael has given me some rather good advice also!
Another gorgeous pup! I'm an avid dog lover and am constantly 'broody' for more although with three of my own I know I have reached my own limit and that of my family.
Do you know how I can try and locate the marriage of William and Ann? I tend to do most of my researching through LDS and Ancestry but do others have some access to some secret records I don't know about or are they just a great deal quicker at researching?
Kind regards Kim

Hi Kim
That's where I tend to do mine researching also, although the Bishops Transcripts are quite good for the North East, however as they are not indexed it does take time to look through them. I also look at the resources on the boards that I am interested in there are useful links on them for researching a particular area.
Many members also have resources that they have bought and are not available on line.
I noticed Mary on the IGI was baptised Felton so I was hoping William and Ann were married there. I've looked back to 1808 on the BT's but I cannot see a marriage for them.
What I did see though was Mary's baptism I presume although slightly earlier than expected. June 26th 1814, Thirston Moor, occupation of William labourer.
What I did see that was interesting and whether or not this is William's sister was a marriage 9 May 1813 of a Mary Davison to a Aaron Dunn. The name Aaron caught my eye as it is quite unusual.
Michael or Alan might have an idea where to look for a marriage.
Evie
