henry davis coroner dublin
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 12:42 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I am looking for any record of the death of Henry Davis ca 1865 Dublin Ireland. Henry was a solicitor and a Dublin Coroner in the 1850s. It is possible that he was buried in Mount Jerome cemetery  Harold's Cross, as an Australian -born grandson who died in England in 1917 was buried there in plot a8-290, possibly in a family plot.
If anyone is able to check the plot, or can throw any light on the details of his death/burial, I would really appreciate it.

He is listed in Thom's directory of 1852 as follows :

Henry Davis. solicitor, coroner for the county of Dublin
9 South William Street - also Coolock

I'll look in Thom's of 1863 this evening and see if that gives a later address.

there's a possible match for his death on the civil index on familysearch :

 Name: Henry Davis
 Registration district: Dublin South
 Record type: Death
 year: 1865
age: 54   (est birth year: 1811)
 Volume: 7 / Page: 594

(South William st is in the Dublin south registration district)

you can order a cert from the GRO with these references - see : http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

Thom's 1863 listing for him has

Henry Davis, solicitor, coroner for the county of Dubli
74 Dame st, res. St. John's Tce, Clontarf

not sure how this fits in ... I looked through some old newspaper articles and see mention of Dr. Davis, county Dublin coroner (no first name) mentioned  at least as late as 1873...there is also some slightly later articles which list the Dublin county coroner as Dr. Davys.

Dear Bruce 609

There was a James Davis (solicitor) at No.74 Dame Street in 1860 and he apparently died in 1885. If you are interested just come back.

Thank you for your interest and your replies. James may be a brother of Henry though I have no information on him; he appears to have shared the same rooms.
My Henry was at Wellington Quay and St Johns, Donnybrook in 1850 according to the Dublin City Directory
There was also a H Davis, coroner, in Cavan in 1858. Whether it is the same man or not I do not know.

The 1865 death was  a possibility, but if there are later references to Henry up to 1873 then there may be another Henry. I will contact GRO for the certificate, and hopefully enlightenment

Henry's death certificate is inconclusive. I am unable to decipher his profession. It could read " gardener" ; if so it is not likely to be "my" man. If anyone can offer a suggestion, it would be appreciated.  In the Place of Death, the ".." of No 17 Merrion Square has me stumped  also.

I think the address reads 'Rere of No. 17 Merrion Square'

The occuaption certainly looks like Gardener

Rere = rear....certainly a likely place for a servant/gardiner to die.

It looks like Henry the solicitor is still out "there"
