Brighton Look Up Please
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 12:46 UTC (UK) »

Good afternoon,

My name is Mike Covell and I am a Local Historian based in Kingston upon Hull, looking for a Hull born man in the Brighton area in 1888.

Robert D'Onston Stephenson, aka Roslyn D'Onston was hospitalised on July 26th 1888 in Whitechapel's London Hospital.  On the patients record he claimed that his address was The Cricketers Inn, Black Lion Square, Brighton.

I have tried contacting the establishment directly and not heard anything back.
I have contacted the Brewery, Golden Lion Group, who told me to contact the Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprise but they could not help either.

Usually I would travel down and check the information myself, but I have a heart condition and travel is not recommended at present.

If anyone is in the area, I would love to know if the Cricketers Inn has any guestbooks from 1888.

Thanks in advance, Mike Covell, Hull.

These days the Cricketers is no longer an inn, it's just a great pub, so the likelyhood of  a surviving guestbook is zilch.
Suggest you contact the Brighton History Centre and ask if they could look up the street directories to find who owned it in the 1880s and then ask if they or a researcher could follow it up with a search of the electoral rolls from that period.

Recent pictures of the pub (next to the old Black Lion Brewery) should be on the Internet and earlier ones in James Grays collection of Brighton photographs

Thanks Roy, I found a site explaining who owned the pub through the many years it has been in existence which helped a great deal, it listed it's source material too, which is even better.

Sadly it did not feature guest lists.

I contacted Brighton History Centre earlier this year but the prices they offered for research were shocking.  I have a couple of photographs of the pub and the lanes area around it.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Mike,

My great great grandfather's brother was the proprietor of The Cricketer's Inn in both 1881 and 1891

If you search for Thomas Pelling on

http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

in 1891 and then scroll down the results for the 'Publican' in the 'Occupations' column, both he, his wife Tamzin (nee Grace, if that provides any clues?) and some of their 7 children are listed.

Perhaps this may help somehow?
