. Regiment idenification
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 15:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Can anyone help me find out which regiment my great grandfather belonged to on 1916.

William Cuthbert Young was born in Glasgow, but during WWI was stationed in St Andrews, Fife were he met his future bride Jessie Bennett, they were married in Glasgow, put both gave St Andrews as there residence he Castle House and she the Cottage Hospital.

His occupation was listed as Carter, Private 3/6th Batt, L. h.

If anyone can tell me his regiment that would be great.
Thx

Off the top of my head I can't think of any units or regiments that have the abbreviations LH. The only LH that I can come up with is the Lancashire Hussars but having checked they were in Oswestry in 1916.

Does it say anything else that might give a clue?

Thanks to both of you for your replies

David he was born at 6 Burnside Street, Glasgow on 6th May 1882.
According to his 1st wifes death certificate in January 1911 he was living at 15 Crail Street, Glasgow, probably with their son John.

JDS1949 that could be him do you have any more information on that William C Young.

Thx again

The more I think about it the more I also think it could be the HLI as they were based and did most of their recruiting in Glasgow.

As he was in the 3rd Battalion he would have been based in the Uk as this was a reserve battalion.

I've taken the liberty of asking your question on a specialist military forum, it has everyone there baffled too. The only thing that we can think of is that the clerk who entered it on the marraige certificate got it wrong.

If I find anything else out I'll let you know.

I'm afraid that I don't have anything else - I just went and looked for the name on the NA website which has the Medal Index Cards. If you want the full card then it will cost you [£2.00] from the website:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp?WT.lp=mh-33439

His papers might have survived - if they have they are available on Ancestry.

If his service record is not on A@y does that mean it was destroyed in WWII?

Along with my Great Grandfathers possibly.

Although it could be still waiting to be scanned as I'm not sure as to whether they're all on A*y yet.

Do you know if anybody in the family has his medals?
