Where would he work?
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 15:17 UTC (UK) »

I just found that my g,g,g, grandfather was a collier who was "killed in a coal pit" in 1840.
He lived in Hollingwood Common, Staveley.
Can anyone tell me which pit he would have worked in please?
Thanks, cg.

It's hard to say, the whole area was covered in mines, there were lots of small drift mines in the area, probably the nearest large mine was renishaw Park but as I said there were so many at that time

It is busy on here today, I have been trying to get on for ages.
Thank you for your reply omskirk, I will take a look at the site.
I never realized there were so many mines in the area, I was thinking if he lived in Hollingwood, he would probably work in a local pit. maybe he worked futher afield.
It will certainly keep me busy, and maybe I will learn more about mining at the same time.
Regards, cg.
