I am looking for Michael Hutchinson and his wife Martha (Clough) on thee 1861 census. They married in Leeds in 1850. I have them on the 1851 census aged 21 and 22, I cannot, however, find them in 1861. Michaels mothers maiden name was Clough and I am wondering if Martha was a relative. Also another problem that I have with Michael is that on the 1841 census he is 12 years old and so his is sister Ann - this is my husbands family, and in each generation there has been a set of boy girl twins (my husbands younger brother and sister are twins). How can I find out if Michael and Ann were twins? I do not know as they were born before registration. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Regards Susan

there's a clue to their whereabouts in 1861 from the 1871 & 1881 census entries which give the birthplace of some of their children as Scotland. You can get the full details from ScotlandsPeople which is pay to view.

Have you looked for baptisms for Michael and his sister to see if they are noted as twins? Also, their marriage cert would give Martha's father's details.

Many thanks for your reply Osprey, I very much appreciate your help, I am now quite confident that Michael Hutchinson did marry a member of his mothers family, especially as there are 2 Hutchinsons visiting the Clough family on the census. I have tried to find a baptism for Michael and Ann Hutchinson (believing they may be twins) but as yet I have found nothing, but I will keep looking. Kind regards Susan

Hi
In 1851 census, Nancy (Ann) Hutchinson, guest at Jonathon Clough's house is in fact married to Matthew Hutchinson (born Pudsey). She has two of her children with her, Hannah Maria and Richard. Her other son William is with grandparents in Pudsey. Her mother was Elizabeth Wilkinson, sister to Jn. Clough's wife, Hannah (Anne) Wilkinson. Nancy's maiden name was Buckle.
I have been trying to connect Michael Hutchinson to my in-laws, but cannot find his birth or parents names. Do you have these?
Michael could have married his cousin, I don't think it was illegal then.
Jean

sorry about that, I've had another look at the 1851 and it says married, think I was thrown by the writing. I'll change my transcription.
There's a 12 yr old Michael in Armley in 1841 HO107/1342/3 folio 37 pg 21

forgot to say that there is no problem with cousins marrying. It has been allowed since the time of Henry VIII.
