Calendar of charters
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 21:48 UTC (UK) »

I have some research abstracts done in the early 1900s simply headed "Calendar of Charters."  These relate to the Edinburgh area in the 1500s.  The abstracts give document numbers (ie. no. 1603, 26 Jan 1553/4) and a simple summary of the document.  Searching the Internet, I find a couple of references to "Calendar of Charters contained in H. M. General Register House, Edinburgh. 13 vols., 1142–1591."  I am wondering if this might be the source the researcher was abstracting.  However, I don't see these volumes in the National Library of Scotland catalogue.

I am hoping someone might be familiar with this and confirm the source.  I want to properly cite the abstracts in my own research.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Surely if these are held in General Register House, they would be in the National Archives of Scotland, not the NLS?

There are centainly a great many charters held by them within the dates mentioned. Perhaps if you search the NAS with some of the details from the abstracts you could find the original documents. It is possible that the Calender of Charters was what this researcher was working on, rather than using as a source.

Register House charters, 1st series, ref RH6 - this may give you some of what you are after.

I said National Library as the citation notes 13 volumes suggesting a publication.  If the National Library does not have a copy who would?  I had previously checked the National Archives catalogue for the abstracts in question with no success.  I'll keep an eye out for future additions to the RH6 series.

If you go to the RH6 collection by browsing rather than searching you get this:

"Description:      A full calendar of these charters is available in the Historical Search Room at The National Archives of Scotland. An edited version of this calendar is being added progressively to this electronic catalogue."

Given the number of charters I would be surprised if the index was not divided up for ease. Perhaps the 13 volumes are simply the index in book form.
I was merely suggesting that your source might be in Register House but will not be available online in the same format. Perhaps you could try contacting them to ask?

Thanks for your thoughts Kirsty.  As you suggested, I'll try contacting the National Archives for their thoughts.
