The inquest would almost certainly have been published in the Huddersfield Examiner, available on microfilm in Huddersfield Central Library, and in the British Library newspapers section in London.

I have the inquest on my great-great grandfather Merchant Gledhill's suicide in Berry Brow in 1886 which was published in the Examiner. The inquest, rather surprisingly, had taken place in a pub, but many places outside large towns had, I suppose, no other available public building. Probably by 1928, some more 'official' building might have been available. The inquest included lots of details of things said and done by Merchant in the hours and days preceding his suicide, giving me a much more complete picture of the man than I could have got in any other way.

regards,
Lesley

In the historic period it was normal for inquests to take place in a public house or other public hall, with the corpse available in an adjoining room for the jury to view!! This was certainly the practise in 1886 and for several years afterwards. There being no refridgeration available it was necessary for things to happen very quickly. My grandmother died saturday morning, and was buried the following wednesday, inquest, sunday all intervening. This was 1901.

In Merchant Gledhill's case, the suicide was late on Saturday night, the inquest was Tuesday, burial Wednesday.

The account in the Huddersfield Examiner doesn't say whether the deceased had a corporeal presence at the inquest! (but interesting to learn that he might have, Redroger.) The jury concluded it was suicide while in an unsound state of mind.

Lesley, I believe it was the law for the body to be on view. The case I referred was also suicide by cutting throat with a razor, so there was no question of the more gruesome bodies not being exhibited.
