I have recently been asked by by elderly neighbours to research their family. The husband's father was born in Switzerland c1882 (found him on the 1911 U.K. census), but unfortunately due to health reasons he (my neighbour) is unable to give me much information at all.
What/where facilities are available for research in Switzerland can anyone tell me?

Many thanks Shaun Have had a quick look and will investigate further - I'm just hoping my neighbour may have a moment when he will recall where in Switzerland his father was born - which would obviously make things much easier.
One further snippet of information that has been recalled is that prior to emigration to the U.K. the father was at one time "probably" in the Swiss Guard at the Vatican.
Perhaps there would be some information available from that source - it's worth a try.
Thanks for the website

Had a quick look and found the relative reference for naturalisation, however (unless I am reading it incorrectly) there is nothing available on the web (index) just that the files are kept at the archive and are open unless other wise specified.
I think I must (strongly) suggest they get the marriage certificate which (should!) give father's father's name but I doubt it will tell me which canton he was born in.
Going to approach the Swiss Guard angle to se if that produces anything (but what would a master baker be doing in the Swiss Guard!!)
Thanks for your suggestions

Many thanks Bob - going there right now to see what's available.
My neighbours are 87 and 95 respectively so time is of the essence if I'm going to find something for them.
A lovely couple - I hope I can help them.
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Here's another link, to a forum for "Swiss seekers". I see there are English queries, too:
http://forum.ahnenforschung.net/forumdisplay.php?f=27
Although I live in Switzerland, I have no ancestors here (I hope) and have no idea how to search competently.
Don't forget though, the "Bürgerort" is the place of one's origins and not one's birth place but I expect your neighbours can explain this to you.

Here's an explanation of Swiss citizenship and the importance of knowing "place of origin" as opposed to place of birth: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,183876.0.html
If your neighbour's father came to the UK, it's possible someone in the family still has his "Familienbüchlein"/"Livret de Famille", which would be invaluable - it will give his parents and place of origin.
What is the surname you are looking for? ( I have good resources for the canton of Neuchâtel.)

Many thanks to all for the tips and research avenues. I am trying to persuade the family to apply for the father's marriage certificate. I think at this point it is the best way forward.
All help was most appreciated
