Would anyone be kind enough to do a couple of look ups on the death records for me?
My ancestors in question are:
Jeremiah Murphy born about 1827 in Ireland, died between 1881 & 1891 probably in St Martins, Guernsey
Charlotte Murphy - born about 1830 in Kent, died between 1881 & 1891 as above
Charles Frederick Murphy - born 1849 in Kent, died after 1911, probably in St Martins
Sophia Louisa Murphy - born 1856 in Dorset, died after 1911, probably in St Martins
I would be extremely grateful if someone could help me.
Thank you
Kind regards
Kim

Hi Kim
I had a look at the death records today held at the Priaulx Library, and this is what I found in St. Martin's:
Jeremiah Murphy died Feb 20th 1883 Charlotte Murphy- no trace, may be recorded under maiden name or spouse's if Murphy is maiden name? Charles Frederick Murphy- no trace, although there is a Frederick Charles Murphy recorded death on May 6th 1930 Sophia Louise Murphy died Sep 9th 1885
One other Murphy death reported in St. Martin's is that of an Ellen Bradley Murphy on Nov 5th 1889.
It is likely that the other missing Murphy deaths may have occurred at the Town Hospital, St. Peter Port, which I didn't have time to check- sorry!
I hope this helps you.
Best wishes
Andy

Hi Andy
Thank you so much for your time and brilliant search
One thing surprises me - Sophia Louise was Charles Fredericks wife and she was alive and kicking on the 1911 census but you have found her death in 1885. How peculiar! She had a laundry business on La Fosse, St Martins.
I'm sure that Frederick Charles is the right one as the family seem to interchange their first and middle names at will on various census returns!
I also wonder if the Ellen Bradley Murphy that you found was infact my Charlotte Murphy as her maiden name was Bradley though I have no idea why she would be named as Ellen. She had her first two children illegitimately, one of whom was Charles Frederick who started life as a Bradley but changed his name to Murphy when Charlotte married Jeremiah Murphy.
Anyway, this has helped me enormously so thanks so much once more.
Very kind regards
Kim

Hi Kim
glad to have helped- just a thought, but maybe Charles Frederick and Sophia Louise had a daughter they named after her mother, and I may have found the daughter's death at an early age? Do you have the maiden name of Charles Frederick's wife please? She may only be recorded under that... again, Ellen Bradley Murphy may be a daughter- if I get the chance to go back I'll try to find the actual records, but that might not be for some time...
Best regards
Andy

Hi Andy
Yes that certainly is a possibility - they had a daughter named Sophia Damond Murphy in 1886 who I have found on the 1891, 1901 & 1911 census, perhaps they named her after another daughter died in 1885. She would have been born after the 1881 census. If you have time on your next visit to Priaulx Library I would greatly appreciate it if you could look up a birth for me.
Sophia Lousia (Charles wife) maiden name was SHAVE.
Like you say Ellen Bradley Murphy may be a daughter BUT I'm pretty sure that Charlotte only had two children illegitmately - Sarah who I don't think ever moved with the family to Guernsey and Charles and then Charlotte married Jeremiah Murphy. But it certainly is a possibility. I will try searching for a death record for Charlotte back in England, maybe she moved back there once Jeremiah had died.
Again, thanks for your help.
Kind regards
Kim

Hi Andy,
Just to add - I looked at the 1911 census again and noticed that Sophia & Charles had 9 children, 4 of whom died before 1911. I've found 6 children so one of these 6 died in Guernsey (between 1901 & 1911) and 3 others.
I'm guessing it would be Charlotte Murphy, born 1882 in St Martins as she is the only one I haven't found on the 1911 - I thought she must have married by then but it looks like she must have been the one who died.
Kind regards
Kim

Hi Kim
I did a bit more digging and have the following on the deaths I gave you before:
Jeremiah Murphy, Chelsea Pensioner, of La Fosse, died 20 Feb 1883 aged 56, son of John Murphy and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick. Sophia Louise Murphy died Sep 9th 1885 aged 8 months, daughter of Frederick Charles Murphy and Sophia Louise Shave. She died of convulsions. Ellen Bradley Murphy died Nov 5th 1889 aged 1yr 8 months, daughter of Charles Frederick Murphy and Sophia Louise Shave. She also died of convulsions. Frederick Charles Murphy, shoemaker of 'Homeland', Saumarez Road, son of Jeremiah Murphy and Charlotte Bradley, died May 6th 1930 aged 79. He died of heart failure and oedema of the legs.
I also found some other Murphy deaths but didn't have time to research them, they may or may not be relevant: Louisa Sophia Shave died Oct 15th 1941 Mona A.W. Murphy Jan 3rd 1952, Castel Mabel R. Murphy May 8th 1956, Castel George J. Murphy Oct 21st 1963.
I'm afraid that's all I can do for you, as I'm back to work this weekend. Hope this has been useful.
Best wishes
Andy

Hi Andy
Thank you so much for everything you have found - I really am very grateful. I have never found the name of Jeremiah's mother so that is a huge bonus. As is finding the deaths of the babies that I never knew about.
I would imagine that Louisa Sophia Shave must be Charles Fredricks wife and I will have to go about finding about the births and marriages of all the children of Sophia and Charles so that I can see if the others you mentioned are maybe grandchildren.
Again, many many thanks - very best wishes
Kim
