Pollock Family, Old Machar 1800's
« on: Friday 06 November 09 11:08 UTC (UK) »

Hello, wonder if anyone is researching the Pollock's of Aberdeen. I have James Pollock married to Elizabeth Forbes in Old Machar. Their son Charles was born in 1821 and he married Jane Silver. I have come across both an Elizabeth Pollock and a Forbes Pollock born sometime around 1826, but not sure if they are connected or if Elizabeth and Forbes are one and the same person! According to some research Forbes married a John Cooper Braik and died in Dundee.

Regards.

Hi Jay

There are two children showing on IGI for a James Pollock and Elizabeth Forbes, including Charles:

1. CHARLES POLLOCK  Christening: 18 OCT 1820 Old Machar, Aberdeen
2. ELIZABETH PULLUCK Christening: 07 JUL 1826 Old Machar, Aberdeen

There may be more entries for children on Scotlands People's Old Parish Register Index www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

On the 1841 census there is also this entry:

Forbes Pollock (female), 15, flax preparer -
Elizabeth Pollock, 15, flax preparer

Address: Skene, Old Marchar

The 1841 census does not show relationships within the household also, ages for this census for everyone 15 years plus are supposed to be rounded down to the nearest five years. So, Forbes and Elizabeth above would have been born between 1822-26.

From the entry above, Elizabeth and Forbes are different people and you also have an Elizabeth christened in 1826 who looks to be Charles' sister. Possibly Forbes was another sister?

Hi, I'm not researching these people, but I found Forbes & Elizabeth living in Skene Square,Old Machar,Aberdeen in the 1841 census. So,in answer to your query they're not the same person! Their ages are both shown as 15, born in Aberdeenshire & working as Flax preparers. Charles was christened on 18th October 1820,& Elizabeth 7th July 1826,both in Old Machar. I cannot find any record of Forbes. There are only a small number of folk with the surname of Pollock appearing in the IGI & 1841 census in the Aberdeen area.Perhaps they are related.

We miss the red flag for posts don't we!

Jay, the info you have on possible marriage for Forbes is showing as correct. Marriage late 1841 and then Forbes and husband John in Aberdeen in 1851 with young family. You could always check for her death if past 1855 to confirm her parents names from it and to be certain of whether she was sister to your Charles.

Hello, once again I am amazed at the lengths rootschatters will go to to help one another. Many thanks to you both for your help and info. I found that Forbes died in 1858 in Dundee but haven't come across her in 1851 in Aberdeen with a young family as yet. I can't find her death on Scotlands People either - this is what made me think Forbes and Elizabeth where one and the same. I didn't realise that ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years...that explains a lot! Will have another look over the weekend. Would like to find out if she was a sister of Charles so that I can rule her in or out of the family

Again, many thanks for the info.

Kind Regards.

This looks to be the 1851 entry - everyone born in Aberdeen:

John Braik 34, Shoemaker (journeyman)
Forbes Braik 28
James Braik 6
Elizabeth Braik 3
Jessie C Braik 1
Catherine Douglas 17, house servant

Address: 178 Gallowgate, Aberdeen Greyfriars

Children's names would fit with possible parents James and Elizabeth  Smiley

Forbes' death is showing as you have on SP: Forbes Pollock/Braik in Dundee, born 1822.
