Decipher place name please
« on: Friday 06 November 09 13:43 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone decipher the place names on this census return? I'm looking for the place names in Column 2 and a decipher of the word following the word "Cheshire" in column 5 regarding the details of John Wilcox.

Column 2 - New Buildings & Park Gate

The place of birth looks to begin with A (as in Bishop Auckland below) - there's Audlem but it looks more like Al....

Found them in 1881 RG10 4206 61 32 in Preston Lancs - as Willocks - John now born Bishop Auckland, Durham; Elizabeth still Ireland - doesn't help, sorry.

Can't find anything on Herne in Darlington or Cheshire. The only Herne's I can come up with are Herne, Herne Bay, Herne Pound in Kent. Back to the drawing board!

Glad you see its Cheshire - have you tried those 2 lads in 1851 / 41 I mentioned ?

hi, if you look up john wilcox married to elizabeth on 1861 census on ancestry, there is a transcribed page of the original record stating place of birth as herne darlington , and having him still living in darlington in 1861

Hi Nancy - despite the transcription, if you look at the full image above, the Column for PoB doesnt have Darlington, just Cheshire and a placename that the OP wants decrypted ....  Wink

Still have not found place name of Herne in Cheshire. Was going to ask the same question regarding where Nancy Drew had come to the conclusion of John's birth place being Herne, Cheshire Parish of St John Darlington. These to me are clearly 2different locations. Have looked at 1851 or 1841 but didn't find anything, have have you located in 1851 and 1841?

Iddon ,

Have you considered that the enumerator made a mistake completing that census? All the other ones say that he was born in Bishop Auckland.
Is it that you can't find his birth there?

My great grandma was born in 6 different places on 6 different censuses  Grin

A mistake on the part of the Enumarator is a possibility and I guess would only be confirmed by locating John in both the 1841 and 1851 census records. I've seen 3 options for him in 1841:

John Wilcox b abt 1826 in Durham
John Wilcocks b abt 1831 Hartford Lane in Davenham, Northwich
John Wilcock b abt 1828 Stockton upon Tees

The John of 1831 above matches approx DOB but not location.
