Tranter Missing 1881 Census
« on: Friday 06 November 09 15:57 UTC (UK) »

I cant find Samuel Tranter, born 1852 Brierly Hill on the 81 Census. I have him on 71 and 91.
I would appreciate help locating him and identifying his first wife.
What info I have follows:

Working backwards
on 1901 his wife is Hanna E from Whitby, son Johh T age 22, Middlesbrough and a lodger James Leadley
in 1900 Q4 Marriage Samual Tranter and Hannah Elizabeth Leadley.
However
1891 his wife is Ann E, from Whitby (age corresponds to Hannah in 1901)
Sons John T 14, Middlesbrough and George, 16, Middlesbrough and also
Jane Leadley, 14, Middlesbrough 'daughter'
So - is this a case of marying one sister after another or did they just say they were marred in 1891?
Who is John T and George's mother? and where are they all in 1881

Possible marriages
Samuel T and Rachael Shelton 1871, Mbro, she dies 1884
or
Samuel T and Maria Lewis 1872, stockton
Birth John T 1877 Q3 Middlesbrough
Too many George births to identify
Possible brother Joseph Samuel born 1873

Any help appreciated

Hi Allan,

Have a look at this one in 1881 - Samuel Kranter, b. Bilston, Staffs.

RG11/4858, Folio 102, Page 39

With regard to James Leadley, the boarder in 1901, have a look at this one in 1881 :

RG11/4847, Folio 58, Page 25

The mother of James is Hannah E. Scadley, aged 25, born in Whitby. On the actual return it does look like their surname is Scadley, but I can't find a marriage for a couple by these names, nor can I locate a birth for a James Scadley.

in 1900 Q4 Marriage Samual Tranter and Hannah Elizabeth Leadley.

This might explain why Samuel and Hannah E married in 1900 :

Death, Sept qtr 1900
James A Leadley, age 44
Middlesbro' Vol. 9d, page   405

The above James could be the same person as James Scadley in 1881, the age is correct !  Undecided

Sorry to keep harping on about Hannah Elizabeth, but this looks like her first marriage. If this is the case, James wasn't a boarder in 1901 .. he was Hannah's son to her first marriage.

Marriage, Sept qtr, 1874
James Leadley
Hannah Elizabeth Outhwaite
