Witcher in Up Somborne
« on: Friday 06 November 09 17:24 UTC (UK) »

Oops been putting requests on beginners board, just worked out what to do, bit by luck, I hope I can remember for next time.

Wonder if you can help?
Witcher in Up Somborne, sometimes spelt Whitcher. Brothers
George Witcher b. 1815, Charles 1821, Jacob 1825, Alfred 1834, are all on 1841 census with mother Sarah Witcher nee Jacob, believe she was married to John Witcher assume he died before 1841 census.
Can trace family forward from here fine, but not back.
Through all census the main part of family stay in Up Somborne.
Would like to confirm if John was the father of the 4 lads, and then parents of John and his wife Sarah (more generations would be fab but will be happy with one)
Thank you for your help. I apologise to Roots Chat team if I've mucked up the system putting requests on beginners board.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat.  Smiley

John & Sarah were the parents of the following children,  baptised in Kings Somborne:
Ann 27 Aug 1809
Betsy 22 Mar 1812
George bp 13 Nov 1814 (surname spelt Wicher)
Mary bp 1 Nov 1818 (Whicher)
Charles  bp 28 Oct 1821 (Witcher)
Jacob bp 28 Aug 1825 (Witcher)

John Wicher married Sarah Jacob in Kings Somborne 13 Nov 1808.

I've had no luck finding Alfred's baptism.  Sad  Since 1841 census does not show relationships, how certain are you that Alfred is also part of the family, especially since he was apparently born 9 years after the previous child and more than 20 years after their marriage.  I would say it is unlikely that he is their child.  How old was Sarah in 1841?

There was a Whicher family in Hursley, near Winchester, which lost 3 of its child members, killed when they fell into a chalk quarry in October 1828. The 3 children were called John, James and Richard, aged 13, 8 and 4 respectively.

The inquest was heard on 3rd November.

I've found the baptism of an Alfred Whitcher in Winchester (St Maurice), son of Elizabeth (no father mentioned) 7 Feb 1834.  I wonder if this is him - so he might be a grandson, son of their daughter Betsy?

Hi Nell,
Wow you are fab  Cheesy

I did not know anything about Ann & Betsy, so I have taken the 1841 cenus as Alfred had to be son of Sarah - which now seems to be wrong.
Sarah at the 1841 census was 54, it does say in profession, widow, but I have no dates to confirm Johns birth or death. Would love to find out though.

On your message you say that Alfred was born 20 yrs after John & Sarah were married - does that info say date of marriage etc or who their parents were?

By what you say about Alfred and the Christening in St Maurice does seem to give a little ray of light for other info, because I have nothing on Alfred after the 1841, however I've seen an 1861 with an Alfred Witcher b. 1834 as a servant in Bishopstoke Winchester, although it says born Winchester if it was the lady of the house who gave the details would she have detailed King Somborne/Up Somborne, I think that Winchester would have been close enough. If this 1861 census is the same Alfred, maybe he moved into Winchester to be nearer his mum. It would make sence because all the rest of the family have stayed in the Up Somborne area as Ag Lab etc.

Thank for what you've done.

I think you may find Alfred with George in 1851 here at HO107/1672/253 p ?6b  Alfredshown as a visitor, born Kings Somborne.

Jacob is on the same page.

I gave the date of Charles & Sarah's marriage as 1808 in my previous post.  Parents are not show on parish marriage entries prior to 1837 - there is no space or 'box' for this info.  Need to work backwards from ages in census or age at death.
