Transferring FH details to new computer
« on: Friday 06 November 09 18:10 UTC (UK) »

My apologies if this is dealt with somewhere already but I've done an archive search and can't find an answer.
My current PC is becoming unreliable and a new one is in the offing.
I have FH data stored on 3 different software programmes. 2 free ones and the other an old version of FTM.

When I transfer data to the new machine, will it be necessary first to load the software for the programme before adding the GEDCOM file or can I just copy the existing records and past to the new computer?

All advice and suggestions gratefully received, thank you.

I don't know about all the various programs, but with RootsMagic, PAF and Heredis I just used the File>Backup option in the menu to create a backup on a memory stick or CDROM, then used File>Restore after installing the programs on the new PC.

In a spirit of "Belt & Braces", I would make as many different types of backup as possible . . . GEDCOM, etc. in case there are problems.

I'm not sure why people are obsessed with GEDCOM files.

If you are going to use FTM on you new computer then transfer the .FTW file from FTM rather than a gedcom file.  Unfortunately if you are using an old version of FTM then you may not be able to use it on Windows Vista/Windows 7.  In fact, you had better check whether you can install all your programs with Vista/Windows 7.

Incidentally you cannot copy programs over from one computer to another like Mike has suggested.  When a program is installed it writes information to Windows registry.  If you were to copy a program over it would not work because there would be no information about it in the registry.

All programs have to be installed from CD/DVD or re-downloaded from the Internet and then installed.

PCmover is the only migration utility that moves programs, files, and settings from your old PC to your new PC.  http://www.laplink.com/pcmover

I have a feeling that when I got a new laptop, my OH just backed up all my files, folders and everything else possible and then when I was ready, downloaded the lot onto my new laptop.

I did have to reload Legacy and Word etc. but that wasn't much of a problem and as I'd got a back up of Legacy, I just opened the last back up and carried on using it.

You could use the Windows Easy Transfer wizard

 Win XP http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2B6F1631-973A-45C7-A4EC-4928FA173266&displaylang=en
Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/easy-transfer.aspx

Incidentally you cannot copy programs over from one computer to another like Mike has suggested.

Not guilty . . . must've been someone else  Wink

But the Backup/Restore option definitely works with most genealogy programs because it creates a new database on the new computer, and preserves all the quirky bits peculiar to the program.

As for GEDCOM, sometimes that's the only way to transfer data between non-compatible programs, but it may not interpret some non-standard items.

My thanks to all for the advice and suggestions. I shall be wearing both belt and braces.
It's a bit alarming to learn that my faithful version 3 of FTM may not function on Windows 7 .............perhaps it's a wonder it still works with Windows XP !

I'd not be in a hurry to get rid of your old computer - at least until you know all your software works properly. I have kept my old slow XP pc just to run a few programmes that I'm too mean/lazy to upgrade  Roll Eyes
