Bradbury Co Durham? If not where is it??
« on: Friday 06 November 09 18:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi Folks,

I am asking for your help again!

I have inherited an old watercolour, but I am not sure where it was painted.  Frustratingly on the reverse side there is only half the backing paper, but on that is what looks like half a street plan, perhaps identifying the picture?  I attach both the front and reverse side pictures for you to look at.

I would be very grateful if some kind soul could help.  Sadly I am not local to Co Durham, and am not familiar with the area. It says on the plan, Bradbury station, first house after bridge, and ?houses either side of the street (front bit of word missing!)

Many thanks,
copperbeech5

Hi there

How interesting! My aunt was born in Bradbury, near Ferryhill, a former coal mining town a few miles south of Durham City. I'm afraid I know nothing at all about Bradbury itself so cannot comment on lanscape in the painting.

With best wishes

I reckon the partial word - preceding "houses" is:   "condemned"

Possibly the staion is (was) one in Darlington

If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and enter the co-ordinates 432143, 528245 in to search it will centre the map on the locatoin of Bradbury Station, which is marked on the 1894-1899 map.

Hi Moni and AMBLY,

Thank you both for taking the time to reply to my mystery, I am intrigued, and frustrated having this sitting here and not quite knowing what it means!

So all contributions are much appreciated to try to put the puzzle together!

Best wishes,

Hi again Copperbeech5

Bradbury is located in quite a marshy area, known as the Isles, and this would fit with what appears to be some flooding in the foreground of your painting.

Here's a link to the Keys to the Past page about Bradbury

www.durham-pa.gov.uk/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRN=D6749

It's hard to make out what the buildings are in the painting. Some shapes look a bit industrial but Bradbury was a rural area. I wonder what the "spire" on the square building is. It doesn't look like a normal church spire.

I hope that there are some people local to Bradbury on this list, who may be able to help you.

With best wishes

Hi Stan,

Thank you for the link to the map, great help

Hi Moni,

Thank you once again for your help, I must admit as you suggest that I was hoping someone local might recognize the landscape, and the church spire!  Still, little bits are always good foundations.

Best wishes,
Copperbeech5

From Genuki - "Bradbury and the Isles form a township whose area is 2043 acres, and ratable value £9357. The village of Bradbury is situated on the Skerne, two and a half miles west of Sedgefield, and formerly possessed a chapel of ease, dedicated to St. Nicholas.
