Interesting table, falcybe.
But it does not fit in with my experience with a black and white laser printer.
The Dell (actually a Lexmark with Dell badge) B&W laser printer I am using is nearly six years old. It is used to print almost every day - thousands of sheets per month. I have only had to buy a new cartridge 3 times! (I got the high capacity one). They used to be about £50, but the last one was £78.
I print nearly all my research (as well as loads of other stuff) on the laser. I rarely do a colour injket printout if it will help me decipher the document better.
So a cheap B&W laser printer if one wants to produce a lot of sheets seems best to me. I print a copy of everything I find (census, BMD, transcriptions & images and all cert orders and more) as well as store on my backed up computers.
Up to four heavy users for this printer, with many long documents printed.

I've got the message, Nick, just like the maths for how many ancestors we (as a country) had 10 generations ago!! And what you say about replacing every 6 months could explain a mystery for me. In our old house, with no heating at all in the room with the printer most of the day and just a standing heater when we were on the pc the 1st cartridges lasted nearly a year (with 4 daughters doing school work). Here in our present centrally heated house and only me around using it, the cartridges started drying out much quicker. So, when my current toner is all gone, do I buy a replacement (for €77) and risk having to buy fuser wire and drum and etc or do I buy a brand new Samsung ML-1640 laser b&w printer for €65? The replacement toner cost seems fairly compatible with other cartridges giving 1500 to 2800 pages of printing. I expect I could always get someone else to do the very occasional colour jobs I would want.
cheers, falcybe ps: pjbuk007, some printer, some cartridges, you have there, is it licenced to kill?

In my experience, yes, if it is sealed in the wrapper.

In my experience, sealed cartidges will keep for a couple of years, if stored in a cool place.
