Death Certificate
« on: Friday 06 November 09 19:23 UTC (UK) »

You always have that thought in your mind at why one of your relations died at an early age.
Well I had this with my Gt Grandfather he died when he was just 30 years old, so of course I searched for his death certificate.
Got it today & what a shock:
Wording on Certificate: Found Dead on the Midland Railway with his head severed from his body.

What a shock this was.

Gosh, that would be a shock for you, any more information ,special circumstances  ? Do you think he took his own life or was it  an accident?
Not so shocking but I recall looking up my mother`s sister and her birth and death were together/
Blanche, born 1894,died 1910, A lovely girl of 16 dying at home on the settee where she slept ,to be warm. My mother aged 14 present  as Blanche coughed up her life`s blood. My mother had eaten raw liver sandwiches so that Blance would--that was standard treatment in those days to try to build the patient up a bit. Blance used to cry at the thought of the raw liver so mum used to try to coax her by eating some herself. that horrified my sister and I.
Let us know if you find out more and don`t mind sharing it. Cheerio. Viktoria.

Hi Viktoria
Yes was a bit of a shock, I am going to try & find out if was suicide or an accident.
I know his wife & he had either split up or were just living apart on 1881 census day.
maybe something to do with no idea at present.
trying to find out if I can find Craven & Herald on line anywhere to see what outcome of inquest was.

Still I am sure more shocks whilst you are researching family history.

That must've been an awful shock but I know what you mean about wondering why people died young. Have you tried the Times Archive? I found reports of a couple of provincial incidents on there.

Hello Viktoria
Finally found Coroners report for the Death not very conclusive but looks like he took his own life reading between the lines.

Poor man and heartbreaking for the family.  It's a good job he didn't fail as suicide was against the law;  there would have been a trial, and if he were found guilty of attempted suicide he'd have been hanged.

Hello
Well they didn't mess about in those days, if you failed suicide then you would be hung.

Yes feel sorry for his family, but reading I think he must have been in total depression as was not living with his wife & 3 children plus he was suffering with paralysis so was struggling to keep regular employment.

Another question for anybody do you know where I might find any information on his Paralysis.

Do you know what part of his body was paralysed?
It could have been from Polio, a back injury which could affect legs, an injury to neck which would affect arms. There could have been a stroke with poor recovery. Lots of possibilities.
You`ve started something  Colin, best of luck. Viktoria.

Hi Viktoria again
Not sure on the Paralysis as yet, that's my next thing to find out about.
You could be correct on the Polio thing or stroke.
Think I need to find either medical records or hospital records.

What a shock, Colin!  You never know what you will turn up, do you?

Good luck with looking for medical/hospital records.  A lot of those have not survived, unfortunately, so I hope you strike lucky.

I wanted to know why a gggrandfather died relatively young, so got his death certificate.  It gave the cause of death as "disease of the brain".  This really stopped me in my tracks - he was a waterman in the East End of London, so pretty poor, and seems to have died at home.  I doubt that there would have been medical or hospital records for him, certainly hard to find surviving ones.  I hope you have better luck!

Hello Marie
Thanks for that, i am trying at moment to find anything i can without any luck.
But like we always say never give up suddenly something will turn up.

Seems to run in the family though as my Grandfather also committed suicide by drinking weed killer on my Fathers wedding day of all days, this was because he was in so much pain with prostrate cancer so i was told.
As he didn't attend the wedding I think he saw this as an opportunity that everybody was busy somewhere else.

Oh dear!!  Cry Cry

You really have had some tragedies in your family.  That is another very sad story - how awful for your father, to have his wedding day marred by his father's suicide!  Cry
