Newspaper Covering Cononley
« on: Friday 06 November 09 19:27 UTC (UK) »

Hi all
Was wondering if anybody knows what paper covers the Cononley area around 1884.
Was looking for info on my Gt Grandfather's death.
Could have been suicide or an accident.

Colin.

Would sugest a paper circulating in Skipton or Bradford. Suggest you get his death certificate which will tell you whether an inquest was held.

Hi Redroger
Yes there was an inquest, I got certificate today & not a nice death.
So would imagine would be Craven & Herald of Skipton would cover this then?.

That seems likely. Having been through something like this in connection with my grandmother's death I know that the newspaper report will be both extremely detailed and extremely graphic.

Is there anywhere online that you can view these papers at all?

There are the 19th Century British Library Newspapers, which are on line and can be accessed through various libraries, although having just had a quick look, I could not find any Skipton or Bradford papers.  You can search on a name and date, so it might be that info about your Gt.Grandfather's death was published somewhere as well as the Craven & Herald of Skipton.

There is also the Times Digital Archives, also searchable on line via the libraries.  Alternatively, suggest you contact the Craven Herald & Pioneer newspaper and ask them if they have newspapers available from the date you are interested in.  On line, they do have news from their archives of 100 years ago.

Colin, These cases were usually widely reported, so Lizzie's idea of other papers is a good one. There is also a remote possibility that the inquest papers have survived, they are closed for 75 years after the case, but that does not apply to you. If they have survived they will be in the local archive.

Thanks Both
that gives me a few things to go on.
I have tried Craven & Herald they only keep archives from 2000 at earliest but say Skipton Library have all on film, am trying them at moment.
Would be good if I can find actual inquest papers.
again thanks for help
