St mary Rotherhithe baptism c 1790
« on: Friday 06 November 09 19:28 UTC (UK) »

Thomas Hornzee m Mary Ann Tomkin(s) in 1809 at St. George East Stepney. On the 1851 census where family appear as Hornza, his wife Ann gives her place of birth as Rotherhithe. Thomas was only 18/19 when he married so I suspect that Ann could be a second wife or else the age shown for her (50) in 1851 is incorrect. It would certainly help either way if someone could check to see if there is a Mary Ann Tomkins who could have married at age 18/20 in 1809.
Thanks

I have found the marriage for Thomas Hornzee ( Hornell) to Mary Ann Tomkins - they were married after Banns - 12 February 1809. This I'm sure is Thomas Hornzee's first marriage.
Regarding the 1851 census - Thomas Hornza (Hornzee) - his age was 65 years, this would indicate a birth year of 1786, which would mean he was 23 years old when he married in 1809.
His wife Ann is aged 50 years (b.abt 1801) - birth place Rotherhithe. Ann would possibly be his second wife. There is also a son Thomas age 16 years (b.abt 1835).

It seems likely that Mary Ann Hornzee died before the 1841 census were taken.

I have found some children born to Thomas and Mary Ann Hornzee, some of these are on familysearch.org and some on An.......y.  Also at least one born to Thomas & Ann Hornzee.

I haven't had any success finding the marriage of Thomas to Ann ? - possibly because it has been  mistranscribed.

If you would like the information for the births - baptisms of the children - please let me know.

Thanks, Sara. I agree with your analysis except that Thomas was baptised in 1790 at St. Mary Whitechapel. The baptism doesnt show his dob but I know that he was the son of James Hornzee and Rachel Beaver who had other children before him. There is a gap in 1786 so he could have been baptised 4 years later. Alternatively the enumerator in 1851 may have got the ages wrong just as he mistranscribed the name as Hornza. Irrespective of this, Ann must surely have been wife 2.
I cannot find a Mary Ann Tomkins in Rotherhithe either.
I have two children born at St. Leonards Shoreditch to Thomas and Mary Ann: John in 1810 and Thomas in 1813.
The Thomas on the 1851 census was born to Thomas and Ann in 1833 and baptised at St. G/East in 1839.
I would like details of the baptisms you found. I would really like there to be a James, Robert and Esther but suspect not.
Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid I'm not going to give you any ones that you don't already have (John - 1810. Thomas 1813).
I did come across the marriages of James to Mary Ann Traffitt - 6 June 1847, St Philip Bethnal Green . Esther to George Herman - 1 May 1862 - St Philip Bethnal Green.
Estimated birth dates are - James (b.abt 1816) Esther (B.1825). Did not see a Robert Hornzee.

Perhaps you already have this information.

I agree with you that Ann was the second wife of Thomas Hornzee.

Thanks for trying; I will have a look at the LMA registers in a few weeks time.
