GRO Birth References
« on: Friday 06 November 09 20:44 UTC (UK) »

Not sure if this is the right place for this one as it's more of a query than anything else.
Is it possible for two people born 5 years apart, in the same family to have the same GRO Reference for the Birth Certificates. I have a Frances Gregory born May Qtr 1881 and William Gregory again born May Qtr 1886 both in Chorley, and both with the GRO Ref of 8e 538!

Is this possible, as I've never come across it previously.

Many Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Nigel,

A funny coincidence but certainly possible. 8e stays the same for Chorley district from 1852 to 1946, and the numbers start all over again each quarter ...

Hi Nigel & welcome to RootsChat

Certainly possible as the full GRO Ref would have to include year & quarter.

Have a look here for lots of interesting stuff about registration & certificates

PS  Post would probably have been better in The Common Room, but we found it anyway   Cheesy

Many thanks to you both, if it's possible, I'll go ahead and order the certificates for both of them.

Once again thank you.
